I think the author brings up some excellent points and for that, I side with him. Bad idea.

It's an interesting idea, but I see a big problem in this paragraph.

Plus, it's not clear how television benefits, either. And what about the practicality of actually playing these games? You could have phantom whistles causing random stoppages of play. How will you control the horn sounds for the end of the shot clocks and substitutions? What about the crowd? Different reactions -- oohs and ahhs -- for different games, but everyone will hear it, right? You'll be staging disadvantages and unnatural conditions; these games will deserve an even larger asterisk than the ones held on aircraft carriers.

I get that college basketball, outside of March Madness, just isn't what it used to be even 10 years ago. And some of the marketing gimmicks they've done with early-season games are cool. But this idea just turns the game(s) into little more than a circus.

Yeah, a circus sounds about right... but that seems to be what happens at Cowboys stadium fairly regularly, so perhaps it's a fitting venue for said circus.

The biggest issue was the inability to find a TV network willing to broadcast four games at once on different channels.

ESPN, CBS and Turner networks were approached, but there were concerns about “diluting exposure and tying down four networks,” Hollis said, at a time of year in which college basketball does not typically receive high ratings.

ESPN.com is reporting a four-team "barnstorming event" (alas, actual barns are not in the plans) that will involve Michigan State, Texas, Florida and North Carolina -- to take place in 2018. How's it going to work? It'll be an eight-day, three-city tour. New York City (Madison Square Garden), Chicago (United Center) and Los Angeles (Staples Center) will also host the event, with each city getting a different matchup.

 

It's scheduled to start Dec. 15, 2018, per the report. The teams will use the same airplane and everything. Fairly novel, this. Some may ask, "When will they do schoolwork?" but really, this is going to be scheduled after the teams complete end-of-semester exams.

Unless they are televising the plane rides (and even then), I don't really get the appeal here so much. A lot of these players already know each other anyways with technology, AAU, high schools increasingly playing games outside of their immediate vicinity, and All-Star games. I do like seeing increasing competitive play during OOC play though.
