After jumping out to a larger early lead yesterday, the US held on for an 86-80 win over Argentina in Spain.
http://www.nbcolympi...-argentina.html

The US won on the boards 41-38. Argentina and the US both had 13 turnovers. Argentina was 9 of 25 from 3, 19 of 29 from the foul-line. The US was 13 of 34 from 3, 15 of 26 from the foul-line.

Given the differences in athleticism, the US does not need to be jacking up 34 3s in a game against anyone.

There is baseball, and occasionally there are other things of note

"I'm too hungover to watch a loss." - McNulty

As soon as I read that stat, this was my first thought.

They should go to the hoop all day long.

Nice story. If he wins the gold, I say he should get to choose whatever song he wants as his "national anthem" to be played at the ceremony.

Argentina was allowing Westbrook wide open jumpers from as close as inside the lane. And he wasn't finishing.

We need to keep Paul and WIlliams out there as much as possible.

I think that's a bit of an overreaction based on one game. Westbrook is a better player than Williams and is usually a decent jump shooter. It's not like he's Rondo.

23-21 Spain, end of the 1st Quarter. Spain holding up pretty well against the ball pressure, do miss Rubio.

Anthony had a good quarter off the bench.

Chandler picks up his 3rd foul with 7:41 left in the 2nd. Love will get more time, but basically the US will play small, with James getting time at the 5.

I keep forgetting that Davis is on the team. This is the #1 pick in the Draft. Supposedly a generational type talent. He is going to be asked to play against Men in the NBA right away. Why does Coach K seem reluctant to put him on the floor for a few mts? All you need him to do is provide a defensive presence, and help on the boards. Seemingly that should be what he is best equipped to do.

The US has pushed the lead out to 15 in the 3rd. The Americans are now getting pressure on the ball, turning Spain over, and getting out in the open court.

US wins 100-78. The game showed why the US would easily win a best of 7, or probably 95+ if they played 100 times. It also showed a blueprint for how Spain could make a game of it, if they match-up for Gold in London.

A lot of Spain's best players didn't play a lot.

Yep. Partly by design, partly due to nagging injuries.
