I think they are hoping that happens but not banking on it in anyway. Clearly they are still guys with some potential. Maybe if one of them really reestablishes themselves in AAA next year it makes moving Hardy next offseason easier with the thought of giving one of these guys the 3b job again or maybe Hardy or Machado go down and one of these guys fill in at 3rd for a long stretch and plays well. That also would make it easier to trade Hardy next offseason. I just don't think these guys(Navarro and Valencia) have any impact on the plans for the starting SS and 3b jobs for '13. Those are Hardy and Manny's spots. Also, while it's a lock Manny begins the year as the starting 3b it's certainly possible he is struggling a month or so into the season and the O's send him down to AAA for awhile. He is a 20 yr old who skipped AAA. These guys are insurance, but insurance with upside.

I do agree with all of this. This is the safe and most likely reasoning.

Roch Kubatko ‏@masnRoch
For people wondering why #orioles DFA'd Stu Pomeranz yesterday., he will undergo surgery on lower back and won't pitch in 2013.

#orioles want to keep Pomeranz in organization, but not have him take up 40-man spot. Have heard broken vertebrae. Serious stuff.

That answers some questions.

I was pleased with Yammy's play over the weekend. His defense was better than I thought. He just had the one play when his toss to Hardy at SS was too high and over his head, but his range was fine. Arm isn't that great from what I can tell, but shouldn't be much of an issue at 2B.

His approach at the plate was great. Obviously a very SSS, but he saw 4 pitches per plate appearance in his 11 PA's over the weekend. Drew one walk, got 3 hits, one of which was a triple.

It's an extended audition, trying to see what they've got before they make a decision to DFA him for Wood.

Navarro is not flashy by any means, but he's probably a better option than Flaherty at this point. I would be fine with Casilla getting that playing time honestly, but he really is a great bench UTIL guy and they obviously like him in that role for now.

I'm glad he's looking good. Hopefully he can play well enough to stick due to his play and not out of desperation. We're threatening to have another Year of the Six Shortstops on our hands.
