Pete botches a routine grounder in the 4th against Detroit in game one of today’s doubleheader, recovers, fires to 2nd but Jackson botches a routine pick. Couple batters later, it’s 2-0 Detroit in a game where the bats haven’t been able to touch Framber.

Holliday had a play where the ball rolled up his arm and over his head. Why didn't he square up on the ball, like we were all told to do as kids? Henderson plays the balls the same way. Instead of playing it like a goalie, they prefer to spear it to the side. No damage done, but not good baseball either.

yeah I commented in the game thread on that play. The idiot official scorer ruled that a hit. Total joke. That ball was squarely in the meat of his glove. Was the ball hit hard. Sure, a bit. But it was a play any MLer should make every day. And I said to my wife the same thing. Why didn't he get in front of the ball like a little leaguer!

Because fundamentals aren't cool. Highlight reel plays are cool, even if it takes a dozen misplays to get one.

Yep, making it on Web Gems and Touch "Em All is so much more important than putting a ball in play to score the game winning run. Everybody knows that.

I don't think glory-seeking or "chicks dig the long ball" has anything to do with the team's offensive approach. I think it's flawed strategy, but it is at least strategic.

Defensively I don't think fielding the ball on your side is bad technique at this level. This isn't little league. Mike Bordick is perhaps the most fundamentally sound defender we've ever had and he charged and fielded the ball on his glove side all the time.

If they fielded more like Bordick and less like little league I would never mention it.

I get your point, they aren't little leaguers. There are going to be plays that require you to just react, rather than set up your best positioning. Still, I doubt Bordick or Hardy threw off the rules of basic fielding. But I could be wrong. At the very least, if you aren't a GG level defender, and the two current Orioles I mentioned, aren't. Maybe go with the more traditional approach to fielding. It can't hurt.

The current MLB top-4 in times picked off, and the only teams with double digits, are Houston and the O's - both bad teams - and the Braves and Rays who are the best teams in each league.

Quite honestly I still see too many flaws. But Im gonna hope something like 84 wins gets a WC and we make some crazy postseason run. The whole AL sucks
