Not crazy about deal. Looks like a mediocre hitter who is versatile afield. They wanted a utility guy and got one-although he doesn't pay short.

They gave up too much. Aracena might turn into something.

He was primarily a SS in the minors. I'd be surprised if they don't feel comfortable with us defense there. Acquisition doesn't make much sense if they still need to carry a backup SS unless they want Holliday for that role which I personally don't.

Holliday as a backup SS doesnt make a lot of sense to me. Too many position switches. Holliday needs to play 2B unless he's got the day off. Westburg needs to play 3B unless he's got the day off. Gunnar needs....you get the picture.

 

Besides Holliday isn't that good defensively in the first place. He isn't going to be better at ss than he is at 2nd.

He has played there all his life so he may be better at SS then 2nd base.

I am more worried about what backup SS responsibilities will do to Holliday's everyday defense at 2B than I am about his performance when he would need to play SS.

Westburg can also back up SS.   Wouldn't want him there regularly, but he actually had more MiL innings at SS than Holliday did.
