I'm on board with 2035 as being skeptical of the fundamental improvement that we all want to see, we'll have to watch how they play once games start for real. But I do think that the pitchers are a different category. Some of them are just knuckleheads and they make focus-related mistakes even if the rest of the team is crisp. Buck's teams were very well led by both coaching staff and players and they did a great job of staying sharp, but they still had some pitchers that frequently were slow to cover bases or made baffling choices. Just from a repetition standpoint, pitchers don't get the same training that position players do, and the ones that have good baseball instincts and always do the right thing should be applauded moreso than the ones that are bad be derided.
Or to put it another way, I don't think some pitchers having loose defensive fundamentals is indicative of the same sort of institutional failing that it is for position players on defense or baserunning.
