If it helps at all, it seems most of the former prospects didn't really have huge upside, either.

I guess I couldve elaborated on huge upside. I dont think any of these newer guys have All Star upside. Compare that to Adley, Gunnar, and Westy whove already been All Stars. Still think Badallo and Holliday have real chances to be an AS. Especially Samuel

George and Aloy need to produce at AA at least but I think they have real potential. Irish looks to have the makings of a solid regular. I don't think anyone expected AS production from Westburg, but he took it up a notch after his rookie year.

It's early, but Ethan Anderson hitting at AA is a good sign. Would be nice to have another high minors catching prospect. Willems is raking in AAA, but not sure of his future outlook behind the plate.

Hit the internal 35 pitches in an inning limit. Everything was either way wild or right down the middle.

A 6'8" 20 year old LHP was always going to be a project. The stuff is good but it's gonna take time.

Not a lot of hot starts through the first couple of weeks. Irish is hitting. Sosa is hitting, not sure how much of a prospect he is. Figuroea is mashing, but he's old for Frederick.

Gibson has a couple solid starts in a row. Levi Wells looks good. Dzierwa and Quinn with great starts to their pro careers. Slow starts for De Leon and Mejia.

IMO there are no exciting position player prospects. Kinda sad. I get that there are some guys like Irish. Aloy, EBJ, Estrada, etc that may be solid MLB regulars. Gone are the days right now of thinking we have a potential superstar. Or even a potential All Star. That was the case with guys like Adley, Gunnar, Holliday, Sam.

Easily the 2 most exciting players in the org right now are Quinn and Dzierwa.

But the player development and minor league portion of the org is stale. And maybe Phelan comes in and tries to debate that but Im not changing that tune. Its pretty apparent IMO.

Probably doesn't help that they've been drafting middle to late 1st. The "elite" guys had all been drafted near the top besides Gunnar. Basallo obviously an international guy but he's the only elite from that group to come through the Latin pipeline. Maybe De Leon or Mejia can get there by the end of the year.

FWIW, of last years top 10 in the MVP race, 7 were international, 7 were in the top 15 of the 1st round, 3 in the rest of the 1st, 3 in later rounds. The year before it's 10 int, 4 top of the 1st, 3 bottom of the 1st, and 3 rest of draft.

 

Need to start hitting on some international guys more than anything, especially if you aren't drafting high. Basallo definitely has tons of promise but he's not at this level yet. And whiffing on Kjerstad and Cowser hurts, with it still TBD if Holliday is even an all star much less MVP candidate.

So about all that great pitching.

De Leon in particular just seems destined for the pen. I guess you can keep letting him start for now but it feels inevitable.

Mejia you give him time to adjust to the States but you have to acknowledge how ugly its been early.


The guys at AAA. Gibson, Wells, German. They all seem ok. But more in the Brandon Young mode of you can call them up to Baltimore and hope they keep you in games. Not much of threats to be future anchors in a rotation.

Whos the guy(s) who could push for top 30 overall prospect status. I think your only real hope is Dzierwa or Quinn. Maybe George if he develops some pop. He so young. But all 3 are in A ball. Long way from the majors and a long way from a potential top 30 status right now.
