After beginning their conference schedule with two consecutive losses, Maryland returns to non-conference play for two games beginning with a trip to Charlottesville for a matchup with Virginia. The Cavaliers currently hold a record of 9-1 (0-0), with notable victories against Northwestern, Texas, and Dayton already on their resume. Their only defeat came to Butler as part of the Greenbrier Tip-Off tournament last month in West Virginia. Ryan Odom is in his first season as their head coach, coming full circle as he was the head coach for UMBC when the 16-seed Retrievers knocked off 1-seed Virginia in the 2018 NCAA Tournament.
Unlike past years under former head coach Tony Bennett, this Virginia team is led by their prolific offense. Belgian freshman Thijs De Ridder leads the way, averaging 16.1 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. As a team they shoot 48.8% from the field, including 40.0% from beyond the arc. They also average 16.9 assists to just 10.3 turnovers per game. Despite bringing just one player with him from VCU (Martin Carrere, averaging 4.7 minutes per game), Odom has this team firing on all cylinders to begin this season.
Maryland is 108-76 all-time against Virginia, but have lost eight of their last nine matchups.
