What makes you think this isn't a very good move?

Not a good defender.  On the wrong side of 30.

It's your classic "paying him for what he's done, not what he's going to do" FA signing.  His worst year by OPS+ is 122.  I would not be shocked if each of the next 5 years is lower than that.

That said, 5 years is not too long and it's not a crippling amount by any stretch.

Like I said I don't hate the signing.  They needed to change the narrative around the team.

You have to trade Mayo and Mountcastle.

Could trade Adley instead of Mayo, but otherwise yes. Assuming they keep Adley which I think it's close to 100%, then yeah, gotta deal Mayo. No path to time for him on a roster with Alonso, Rutschman and Basallo.

I won't repeat my other comments here, but still the same for me.

I like Alonso. I get why people are excited, but I think the focus is on the wrong things.

You have to trade Mayo and Mountcastle.

Right.  Frankly I think it's not a very good move, but the they needed to make a move to change the narrative.  The symbolism is more important than the actual baseball for this one IMO.

Curious to see what dominoes fall from here.  Can't really have Alonso, Mayo and Mountcastle all on the same roster.

Pete makes a soft lineup tougher.  Think how Nelson Cruz changed the lineup in 2014.  I think  Alonso is the enforcer, this lineup has been lacking.

Respectfully, I think this is a good move.

Even if he declines he is just a run producer. Guy will get to 30 and 80 RBI min every year even if the BA and defense are down. You need guys to plug into the middle of lineups

And yes hes 31 and it could be a bust of a contract. Players over 30 always carry that risk

Sure.  I think he raises the floor of the lineup.

I will say, this makes me dislike the trade for Ward a lot less.  I still don't like it but part of why I didn't like that trade was because I thought they were going to say Ward was the "impact hitter" and just stop there.  Adding both Alonso and Ward should provide a much needed jolt.

Glenn Davis.  Chris Davis.  At least he's not Pete Davis.  But yeah, 1B typically don't age well.

Especially if they keep ONeill who I think will get some DH ABs. Mayo is being moved for a SP. Framework likely already in place

Saw a post saying Alonso would be the lowest drafted player in this lineup at 64th overall (except for Basallo, who wasn't draft eligible).

I think it could be Gore or one of the Marlins starters (Cabrera).  I am still hoping for Joe Ryan though.  I think they sign a good starter too.
