Certain other positions wouldn’t include LF, CF, or RF?
Bottom line. This thread was about our pick at #7. You said “It makes total sense projecting them taking a SS”. Based on their drafting history this statement made no sense. When I pointed that out you moved the goalposts to how many SS they ‘ve taken in the first 5 rounds. When I again mentioned they’ve taken predominantly OF with their first pick, you said, well yeah, there’s three OF and one SS so that makes sense.
So now, do you still think it makes total sense that they’ll take a SS at #7 and why that makes total sense?
Yes it does, because they have spoken about their preference for shortstops in the draft, and have taken a disproportionate number with their top picks.
There have been 47 picks in the first 5 rounds since Elias's first draft.
Of those 47, 10 have been shortstops. That's over 21% on a single position.

Ha. We have had 7 drafts under Elias. They have taken a SS once. That’s 14%. I’m not arguing that they don’t take a lot of SS. I’m simply saying it’s incorrect to say it makes total sense that they’d take a SS with their top pick this year based on previous drafts. If the top player on their board is an OF they’ll take an outfielder. If it’s a SS they’ll take a SS. The early mock shows two college SS at #1 and #2 and two HS SS in the top ten. It certainly wouldn’t surprise me if they took a SS with their top pick. It just has nothing to do with their drafting history.

Albernaz is establishing accountability with the Orioles. I’m doing it here. Lol

“It makes total sense to project them taking a shortstop, because it seems like they always do. However, I'd love to see them take a pitcher”
It may seem like they always do but they clearly have not with the very first pick. And the first pick is what the posted mock draft is talking about. So, that’s an incorrect statement. It’s not even defensible but we go on.

This is like saying that Aaron Judge is unlikely to hit a home run in the 3rd inning of an away game in a dome on a cloudy day during a nightcap of a double header in July because he's only done it once.
They take a lot of shortstops with early picks. Any position contrary to that is indefensible. Their drafting history reveals their priorities, not just who they select with their very first pick.

When I read his original comment, I took it to mean that they tend to prefer shortstops. I didn't imply "their first pick" to his comment, and then respond as if he said the O's always take a shortstop with their first pick of the draft. You attributed an assertion to him, that he never made, then responded in your usual fashion.

Everyone's arguing about shortstops, but I think projecting them to take a high schooler is not likely to be correct.

The original post posted a mock draft of the first 10 picks with us taking a SS. Slide’s comment says yeah, makes total sense that we would take a SS. Hmmmm.

Ok. They love SS. How many of our 7 top draft picks has been used on a SS? It’s a simple question. Can you answer it?

Every teams loves SS. The vast majority of position players are drafted as either SS or OF.

For some reason, I still remember that Mountcastle was drafted as a shortstop. For fun, I looked up that draft. We probably all remember that the O's first pick that year, was DJ Stewart, he was the 25th. Interestingly, the 26th pick was Taylor Ward. Dan could have just saved the team some time. ![]()

One. Why does only the top pick matter when Elias loves to go under slot with it? Look at who, and what, he targets.

Dude, someone posted the top ten projected picks with us taking a SS at #7. You replied it made total sense to project a SS there. Were you not talking about the very first pick? One. Why does only the top pick matter when Elias loves to go under slot with it? Look at who, and what, he targets.
P.S. You couldn’t answer a simple question.

I think it makes sense for them to take a SS because they love them. Any time they take a SS, I'm never surprised because it has become a trend. Projecting them to take one who lines up as possibly the BPA when they pick is right on brand.
This is really bothering you and I don't know why. Your obsession with the first pick is really weird. In baseball especially, when there is bonus money to manage and economic and signing considerations to keep in mind, an overall draft philosophy can't be gleaned from a single pick.
