Following their fifth consecutive loss of the season against Rutgers, Maryland heads back on the road for a matchup with Illinois in Champaign on Saturday afternoon. The Fighting Illini currently hold a record of 6-3 (3-3), and are coming off of a bye week. Bret Bielema's team was ranked as high as #9 in the country before losses to Indiana, Ohio State, and Washington dropped them out of the AP Poll.

Maryland is 2-1 all-time against Illinois, but lost their last matchup in 2023.

Illinois opens as 14.5-point favorites in this game. ESPN gives them an 85.0% chance to win.

Excellent, they're coming off their bye!  We all know that it is nearly impossible to win after a bye week.

I'm not quite to "rooting for them to lose" status yet but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't under consideration.

I'll take whatever result is necessary to ensure a coaching change is made. And since I have no idea what that benchmark is, sadly I'm pretty much at the point where the more losses, and the uglier they are, the better.

Just can't bring myself to do it.  Even if I know logically it might make sense.  Sports loyalty runs irrationally deep.

RB Eli Mason, WR Jalil Farooq, and DB Dontay Joyner will serve as the team's captains for this game.

Totally understandable. It’s hard to root against the players, who seem to be putting in the effort and who would seemingly be getting better results with better leadership. For me, it’s taking a step backward to take two forward, but I know the sentiment in the building is far different.

Maryland just punted down 24-6 with less than four minutes left in the game. I know it has absolutely no bearing on anything, but it’s pretty clear that Locksley has completely given up.

I have criticized him on this for years. He throws in the towel too early. MD isn't going to win this game but what kind of message does that send?

It's time for him to go.

No one else associated with the school really cares about football (because he still has a job), so why should he?

It’s almost like he has some sort of hidden clause in his contract where he gets a bonus if he keeps their average margin of defeat under a certain number. Which, honestly, sounds like the type of loser-mentality thing Damon Evans would totally do lol

Illinois wins, 24-6. Maryland loses their sixth consecutive game.

They’ll return to College Park for their final home game of the season next weekend against #18 Michigan.

Fridge did this once and when he was asked about it he said he thought there was a better chance of the opponent muffing the punt than there was of his offense converting the 4th down and continuing down the field.  Lol.

Locksley throws in the towel the second we flip the calendars to October.
