Stuff like this makes me wonder how many people have never gotten caught. Every inexplicably bad decision feels like it could be motivated by something else.

That's the whole point though right? No one cares that much, in a vacuum, if Clase threw ball 1 to a bunch of batters and then tried his best to strike him out. He's really good, so it's likely it didn't even affect any games. The whole point is that now everything he touched is in question, and if this became common then anything anyone else touched could possibly be in question too, especially if you're cynical enough. That's why you have to snuff it out quickly and thoroughly.

Sports in general should've never gotten in bed with gambling. It's literally everything they preach against with regard to integrity.

We've heard about corruption for years in boxing.

I agree.

Just too much $ to resist selling out I guess.

It’s not even that much money. It seems like it was like $12k a pitch. For a guy who was looking at a $100M deal in a couple years.

That’s why dude is right, you need to throw the book at him in the most absurd way to make sure this just doesn’t happen again.

100% in on the stiffest possible MLB penalties. Lifetime ban is absolutely justified.

I wasn't talking about the pitch.

My response to BaltBird was in reference to the 100 million that MLB took from Draft Kings or whomever.

It seems that the integrity of the league does indeed have a price.

UFC is facing the fire with what is likely a recent thrown fight. Plus, its a sport where the fighters arent getting paid very well. Especially the ones lower on the card. People are starting to dig into results and boy oh boy could this be a huge scandal. But the UFC has a very powerful ally, so who knows how much just goes away

What will be even more telling is that there there will be no Congressional Hearing on how legal internet betting enabled these recent NBA & MLB gambling scandals. There should absolutely be a Congressional hearing on the scandal involving the Cleveland pitchers.

You likely won't hear a peep from Congress, despite MLB'S anti-trust exemption, because a lot of members are probably heavily invested in these gambling platforms because they are pretty much immune to any "insider trading" laws.

Further, it's crazy that about 26 years ago we had Congressional Hearings because a guy who was very likely on PEDs hit 72 home runs, but a betting scandal like this one that calls in question the game's integrity will likely be ignored.

These two players will serve some jail time too. It's perfect really, one millionaire and one potential millionaire will be sent off to serve federal jail time. Meanwhile, the billionaires who run MLB and the millionaires in Congress who support them will continue to glom $ from people who may or may not be able to afford rent or other necessities.

Seth admits his bias, I'll admit that I've probably got the opposite bias when it comes to gambling in sports, I'm definitely a pearl-clutcher on this issue.  Apart from the ethics discussed in this thread it's just incredibly annoying how prevalent it's become in sports discourse.  Not just the ads during games on TV but the amount of programming on TV and radio devoted to it.  Sometimes it seems like actually winning the game isn't actually relevant anymore, just matters if you cover the spread.

Now get off my lawn.

Its a a boom phase. It will all slow down over time. Im lucky I dont have an addictive personality. I enjoy betting but its completely casual for me.  But make no mistake,  books are out there to prey on the  big losers. It needs to be regulated better thats for damn sure.

It's so wild to see it being so accepted as far as media coverage goes.

Al Michaels used to have to find a way to sneak in gambling references at the end of games "Even though the score is 43-6 This extra point is super important to some out there". We'd all laugh and that was that.

Nowadays the line is at the bottom of the screen on every game in every sport. I started in the industry in 1997, and it was like a secret world, no one understood what I did for a living 'So, you're a bookie" was the question at every one of my Wife's Christmas parties for years. Now my Mother knows what "Under 47" means in a Football game. What a world!
