Despite no retirement announcement and still mathematically clinging to postseason hopes, this game against Pittsburgh today sure has all the feels of Ovi’s last game at Cap One. Even last night when they played in Pitt the Penguins played a tribute video for him and he got a standing ovation from the crowd.

Caps did their part and beat the Pens 3-0. Now have to sit and hope Carolina beats Philly tomorrow to avoid elimination before Tuesday’s finale at Columbus. (And depending on tiebreakers that may need to be a regulation win for Carolina)

Makes that beating they took in NY last Sunday so much more frustrating.

They shouldn't have even been in the discussion really, but it was kinda funny they almost slid in to the playoffs.

While I'm disappointed they missed the playoffs, hard to be really disappointed with a 95 point season.  Tough year in the Eastern.

How is Kyrou better than McMichael? What am I missing?

Yeah not a fan of that move. The 16th pick feels like too high a price to pay to swap McMichael for Kyrou, both of whom are coming off somewhat disappointing seasons but McMichael’s relative youth feels like he’s the better bet. Would think this has something to do with money and the Caps think he won’t be worth what he’s likely to get as a RFA.

I think it's actually more about his position. I think they see him as a better C than a wing, but he's not going to play ahead of Dubois or Strome, and he's not well suited for a physical 3rd line or checking line role. If you look at him as a wing vs a wing, Kyrou is probably a better scorer. He's not cheap, at $8m per for the next 5, and I strongly doubt they think Connor is going to get THAT kinda money. But very different types of players. Kyrou is more like a Bondra like player (he's scored upper 30s a couple times, not sure if he's got 40-50 in him or not, never know on different teams. 

 

Today they went and got Kuch from the Sabres in a sign and trade. Gave up a 3rd, he was considered the best offensive option on the table this offseason. Has scored in the 30s a couple times. Similar kind of numbers to Kyrou, but he's 30 and we owe him $10m x 8 years. I don't like him at 38 making 10m. 

 

Went heavy on offense. Nothing on D. Have $12.5m left, but if Ovi were to come back he probably gets that, or a big chunk of it.

Ovi made it official he will return for one more season, signing a 1-year/$4.25M contract.
