I mean I think every generation of athletes think the ensuing generations are doing things wrong, I'd imagine lots of deadball era guys thought that once Ruth and other guys like Foxx, Ott, etc showed up that baseball was focusing too much on hitting homers and not enough on small ball, stealing bases, etc.

I think you're right about it being a sport problem.  I think in some ways the things players of the past held true, things like base running, hitting the cut off, small ball concepts, making contact with 2 strikes,  proper tag fundamentals etc. has been replaced by some of the modern concepts.  I think it is even more pronounced on the pitching side.  The days of work fast, change speeds and pitch to both sides of the plate has become, throw as hard as you can with as much spin as you can on every pitch.
I have to think a smart team will eventually do more to bring both concepts together.  Again, I think Buck could fix some of these glaring problems the Orioles have but I am not sure he would even be considered, because his methods probably would not fall in line with the current regime's priorities.

Agree with everything you said. But forget the Showalter dream. He could never exist with Elias.

Just for fun

1908 amount of guys with 30+ SB - 19

1928 amount of guys with 30+ SB - 2

Can't imagine they had online forums in 1928 but I'm sure these conversations have existed for literally a century

While all sports have evolved over the generations, when it comes to baseball there ought to be things that are timeless. I can't fathom there are analytics that indicate it's fine to give your opponents extra outs, or needlessly give away an out of your own, with mental errors in the field or on the bases. It's just completely counter-intuitive.

Elevating anyone from within the Org, to manage the big club, is a really bad idea, if you're looking for change. The first name I'd cross off is Britton. These guys are like a clubhouse or dormitory of friends, and Britton is their R.A.

It's nearly impossible to discipline a player friend, and still get invited to the Lego party.

Britton isnt getting the job. No way ownership lets that happen.

If Britton was a serious contender he would have gotten a test run as interim.

I just used Britton as an example, because I know there are folks on this board who really want to see him get the job.

At one point Britton coming up through the ranks with all these guys was a positive. At this point it’s probably a negative.

I agree with Baltbird that if he was a serious candidate they probably would have tried him this year.

I still think it could be a first time MLB manager. Just dont think it will be Britton. This was his first year coaching in MLB period. Compare that to say Ryan Flaherty for example. Flaherty has been coaching at this level for 6 years

Not sure why but I've been thinking it's gonna end up being Joe Girardi for some reason. Haven't seen him suggested and wouldn't be my choice, but that's the name that keeps popping up in my fever dreams.

If the hiring of the next manager is left up to Elias completely, I would expect someone who is going to adhere to his organizational philosophy and follow the protocol. If Rubenstein gets involved in a serious way, all bets are off.

Btw if they brought Flaherty on as manager and Buck as a special advisor that would be awesome. Assuming both Flaherty and Buck were good with that. If Elias doesnt like that plan he can kick rocks

I feel like Flaherty has been a hot name. He will get a job soon. If Buck was an advisor that’d be awesome. He’s going to be 70, he may be done with the every day grind, but I’d welcome him back in the org.

I’m very curious if the pick will be an extension of Elias or his own man. Obviously the manager and GM need a close relationship and to be on the same page, but I want someone who will at least feel like he can be independent as needed. Was never sure about Hyde there.

Never really thought about Girardi but that's an interesting take.  He is old school in a lot of ways and if you're goal is a quick turnaround, he wouldn't be a bad choice in my opinion.  You could certainly do worse.  But I do think that would be ownership driven if he was hired. I'm fairly confident Elias would rather have a David Ross or Skip Schumaker.  Or even Flaherty.

I mean the 1970 Orioles, a WS champion with Earl, made 74 outs on the bases (B-R's definition is separating it from force outs and caught stealing) and the 2021 Orioles, an absolute disaster of a baseball team on purpose, made 47 outs on the bases

I'm sure people could spin that as the 1970 Orioles being aggressive baserunners and the 2021 Orioles being bumbling idiots...but...I think it's quite possible that the players will have rose-colored glasses of their own era and the same for fans nostalgic for those years

The 1970 O's got on base a lot. The 2021 team not so much.

I was trying to find the stat that shows how many times each team got on base. I couldn't, but I feel confident that the 1970 team was much more successful in that column.
