You don't consider a start in which a pitcher only goes 4 innings and gives up 6 hits, 2 walks, and 3 runs "bad"?

 

You’re the second person to mention that he walked 2 batters last night.  The box score I’m looking at shows 1 walk.  56 of 81 pitches were strikes (69%), so that’s good. He gave up a HR, which isn’t good.  The question on the other 5 hits (1 of which was a double) would be quality of contact. Anyone who has watched any Orioles games this year knows that between poor fielding and strange Official Scorer decisions some times turn outs or errors into hits. As for his number of innings, maybe it was decided before the game that he would be pulled after a certain number of pitches or outs.

Poor start? I would say no based on the percentage of strikes and only 1 walk.

Some of this could be the pile-up of innings and their effect. Some could be the fact that they've figured him out to some extent. But there were lots of calls to move him AAA (me among them). That was premature. Leaving him at Bowie was probably the best thing.

 

I don't think 2 subpar starts means anything.  Guys are going to have off days sometimes.  They could have bumped him to AAA and it would have been fine.  

 

If anything I think he's probably a bit fatigued nearing the end of his first pro season.  AA I believe ends next week so he's probably got 1 more start I would think.  Wouldn't be shocked if it's a very good one.

Ive mentioned the MLB ball before but I feel even more strongly not being overly invested in results before AAA. Not only can it be a noteworthy jump to AAA because of the ball, but then the jump to MLB is huge because of the talent gap. Obviously, Id rather see guys performing in AA and below but I really do have to show restraint.


Im sure these guys throw the MLB ball in the offsesaon and practice with it at lower levels. Still dont understand why there isnt a uniform ball.

 

Fully agree.  Well, between the above and TINSTAAPP in general.

 

I keep an eye on them until they get to AAA.  And once they have success there it's more real.

From what I can tell with a bit of googling, major league balls are made in one factory in Costa Rica using US leather, are hand stitched, and have tight specs they must meet. Minor league balls are made in China with lower grade leather, different cork, and by machine. It ends up being like twice as much per ball for MLB balls. So as usual with everything, the answer is mostly money. Also Rawlings would have to vastly expand its operations or they'd have to use somebody else.

Yeah gotta save some money on baseballs.....hey lets give this HS kid $1M.

On Wednesday, I went back up to Double-A Harrisburg to see Orioles left-hander Joseph Dzierwa pitch for Chesapeake in a matchup against a rehabbing Jarlin Susana for the Nats. Dzierwa was disappointing, as the Harrisburg bats were all over him, making hard contact against all of his pitches, including his soft 91-94 mph fastball. His changeup was his best offspeed pitch at 82-84 with good deception out of the hand. His curveball was better than his slider; lefties were turning on the slider because it wasn’t breaking very sharply.

I give him credit, though, because he battled through five innings, and the Orioles deserve credit for letting him stay in the game when every minor-league manager is handed a silver hook and told to use it at the first sign of trouble. This was the first time all year Dzierwa gave up four runs in a game, and even though they came in the first three innings, he stayed in for two more and helped Chesapeake stay in it enough to tie it up after he left.

Jeez Keith. I wonfer if its the end of his first full pro season. This goof will let this one Sept game he saw weigh way too heavily in his rankings and evaluation of him going forward.

Yeah, touching 95-96.

He's also rail thin, so some added weight could see an increase in velo.

I believe so. Maybe closer to 94 but he doesnt have top end velo

I'd say 92-94, touching a tick or two higher. Its still a great pitch because of deception, extension, and command.

Its more about how this will carry over into how he thinks about Dzierwa going forward, unless he catches him again on a good night.
