Hopefully it does not get lost in the loss; but Arrieta delivered another high quality outing tonight.

Yes he did...Not surprising that he had the struggle in the first...after the short rain delay, after he warmed up and then he struggled.

It hurt his ryhthm I am sure.

Another quality start from Arrieta tonight. Been a great beginning to the year for him.

He really has pitched extremely well so far this season. If we get this type of production all season from him, I will be very impressed.

I said it over on the OH...he's got ace stuff. His fastball moves, his breaking balls are sharp, and he seems to have the mentality required to be an ace. Maybe this is the year he puts it all together.

Thought Jake looked really good last night. Promising stuff from him, and he's been able to be pretty pitch efficient and get fairly deep into games.

He always had good stuff but the difference in his stuff this year is obvious.

We shall see how things progress as the innings pile up but for right now, it appears that the elbow was more of an issue than what he led on because he is really letting it loose and throwing great.

The curve that he threw to Dunn in the at bat later in the game where he fell down 3-0 and then struck him out was downright nasty.

I thought the fastball he threw the pitch before was even better. Started on outside third and moved down and away, but still right on the edge of the strike zone. Dunn was sitting heat at 3-1 and swung right threw a good one. I know he's been struggling, but it's still impressive to get a fastball by Dunn when he's sitting on it.

I took an in depth look at Arrieta's first 3 starts. His biggest real improvements so far this year are his velo and his walk rate. Read the piece at the link below. Do you think he'll maintain his improvement or lose it as the season goes on? Let me know either here or over at the comments section on my blog.

Great stuff Kevin. I agree it's way too early to know if this is a new Jake or just a good month, but the increased velocity is definitely nice to see. Gotta think that has something to do with the surgery he had and hopefully finally being 100% healthy.

I'm surprised that his swinging strike percentage is still below league average. Guess he's getting a relatively high percentage of his strikeouts from called strike 3's at this point.

Arrieta flashed some absolutely filthy stuff during the first four innings, particularly with his k's of Abreu, and Pujols in the 4th. His breaking ball was very tight, and he had a lot of movement on his fastball.

With as strong as Arrieta had been in the first four innings, the bottom of the 5th was very tough to watch. Arrieta seemingly lost all focus after being handed the 2-0 lead. Arrieta allowed a lead-off single to Hunter, and compounded things with his second throwing error. Things only got worse after a wild pitch. After getting a k on Iannetta, he would walk Bourjos to load the bases. Not the way to respond after his offense got on the board. He would be pulled with the bases loaded, the O's down 5-2, and only 1 out on the board.

For the game, Arrieta's line was 4.1, 6 hits, 5 er, 3 bb's, and 5 k's. This elevated his season era to 4.01.
If you look at Arrieta's first three starts, and the first four innings tonight; you can easily see the makings of a front of the rotation starter. It was very disappointing to see Arrieta fall apart like he did. To me, it will be important for him to respond with a quality start, his next time out.

Tough 5th for Jake but I am not worried. His first 4 innings were more of his stuff than the 5th. The biggest key is his next start. It will show whether or not he can bounce back or it got into his head. I am hoping for the first one. He just can't let this game play with his head. This season is a marathon not a sprint (as Terrell Suggs would say). One bad inning does not define his season. Let's go get 'em!

Arrieta back on the mound tonight. After his tough 5th inning in LA, want to see him get right back with another positive outing.

Arrieta gets the ball, with a chance to win this series in NY.

Didn't really like his last start out. Jake needs a nice bounce back start. He pitched well (better than his line) against the Yankees last time out. Hopefully he'll repeat that and get a nice line and a win to show for it.
