is this new regarding comp picks or am I just behind the times?

Two other teams also got picks at the end of the third round for having minorities hired as head coaches or general managers for other organizations. The Los Angeles Rams got a pick for developing Atlanta head coach Raheem Morris and Detroit got one for New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn.

I think it started some smallish number of years ago... could be wrong.

Yeah we got picks for “developing” David Culley. I think that’s around when it started.

That is the first time I knew the rule existed.  We got 2 thirds and Culley got fired by the Texans in less than a year.

Total tangent but i think the way DEI is implemented for NFL coaching/executive positions is genius. You have to interview, no obligation to hire. If you hire a coach and he becomes a HC or GM, you get extra picks. So teams are incentivized to pick the minority candidate for assistant positions only if there is no difference between the 2 candidates, and people can never claim that they took a less desirable candidate because they wouldn't get comp picks if the coach sucks.

The fact that minority hiring has increased drastically despite the fact that interviewing is the only requirement is telling that the system has pulled better candidates into these positions that previously would have been overlooked.

That makes two of us. That's why I asked the question. I saw the story and I was like "huh"

As a black American, I agree. The fact is a lot of qualified black coaches have been passed over the last couple of decades. So it's good there is some progress being made. And for the record, I don't like the DEI thing. How about we hire coaches based on merit and not on their skin color. I get DEI initiatives helps with minority hires, but it shouldn't be necessary. But even as a 60 year old, I'm a dreamer

To be fair, I think the philosophy behind DEI is that our country is indisputably racist in it's history, laws, real estate, legal system and more, and that whites exercise meritless privilege everyday. Acknowledging this reality means requiring that folks without the meritless privilege be given something to even the playing field, so that merit can be the real determining factor as everyone desires.

DEIA isn't affirmative action.

Ben Cleveland resigned, which is…surprising.

The dude's probably going to have a 10-year career of never amounting to anything.

Yeah. They needed the depth. I've given up hope for him becoming a starting caliber G, however.

I'm ok with him being in a back up role. I'm fully expecting about 3 OL draft picks minimum. Would love to see one of the better OT's fall. I have no faith in Stanley making it all season again.

The degree is minor since it's a small move, but completely shocked they resigned Cleveland even if it's dirt cheap. If have guessed he was a guy they hated. They certainly seem to treat him like that.

The way Ken was talking about it shows that right wing media has grown and obscured the term to mean everything race related basically.

They don't even know what it is, and when that's the case, you can decide it's whatever you want.

Cleveland knows the system and I believe that he played some preseason snaps at RT. Maybe they think He's a cheap Mekari-lite. Seems like a low risk move to me.

Uninformed speculation but maybe the DUI caused him to call the team (or Harbaugh) and admit he wasn’t as dedicated as he should be, using it as a wake up call, ready to be all in, etc

I forgot about the DUI.  Now I'm pissed off again.  And more convinced than before that they'll do nothing about Tucker.

I think they're very well-run from a football perspective, but they have disappointing character as a collective group.  That applies to everyone who I think is part of the decision-making team.  Ozzie is the one who stings the most.
