Following their win over Minnesota, Maryland will travel north to Evanston for a matchup against Northwestern on Thursday night. The Wildcats currently hold a record of 10-6 (1-4), and are in the midst of a three-game losing streak. Chris Collins is in his 12th season as their head coach, and has led them to the NCAA Tournament's Second Round two years in a row.

Northwestern is led by an excellent trio of upperclassmen: Nick Martinelli, Brooks Barnhizer, and Jalen Leach. They combine to average 52 points and 17 rebounds per game, with Barnhizer nearly averaging a double-double. The problem for Collins' team is that the rest of their squad has been very unproductive this season. No other player averages more than seven points per game, and the entire team has struggled with their offensive efficiency.

Maryland is 12-6 all-time against Northwestern, but the Wildcats have won four of the last six meetings.

KenPom Rankings

  • Maryland: #24 (#25 ORtg, #24 DRtg; #71 AdjT)
  • Northwestern: #55 (#87 ORtg, #33 DRtg; #293 AdjT)

IIRC Martinelli killed MD in College Park last year.

Frankly I expect a typical Big 10 slogfest filled with lots of slow-developing half court offense and fouls.  Tough to pick MD in a road game against any sort of decent opponent at this point.

Maryland enters this game as 1.5-point favorites. ESPN gives them a 53.4% chance to win.

Based on what I’ve seen up to now I would steer way clear of taking this team as a road favorite.

Thats baked in though. This MD team is -6 to -7 points on a neutral court. But again, I dont know if I can actually pull the trigger.

Pull the trigger, MD is going to win.

They absolutely are. A trip to Chicago will be a cake walk compared to their west coast trip a couple weeks ago.

OTOH, if they don't, it's time to legitimately raise the alarm bells.

For me it wouldn't be alarm bells, just disappointment.

They're getting to the tournament, but that shouldn't be enough.

This is a pretty talented group.  They shouldn't have to crawl their way into the bracket.

They've got an opportunity right now to do some damage in the regular season, BTT, and the NCAAs.

There is certainly enough talent on the roster to be a S16 (or better) team.
Seeding plays a part.    Losing tonight would a game that hurts the overall resume.

Also, not that it needs to be said every game.... but it's not just that Queen is likely gone after the year...  there is going to largely be a whole new bought roster.   Really need to make the most out of this group, and achieve something.  That will only make it easier to get the next group of guys to take their money.

Learnt Iowa WBB is 2-4 in B1G play from this, that Caitlin Clark might've been good huh

You know you're something special when you are pre-empted by a WBB game between Nebraska and Caitlin Clark-less Iowa.

Didn’t Big 10 network used to have like 4 channels? Why make us wait

There is baseball, and occasionally there are other things of note

"Now OPS sucks.  Got it."

"Making his own olive brine is peak Mackus."

"I'm too hungover to watch a loss." - McNulty

Already 7 turnovers for Maryland. Playing with very little focus tonight.

Lot of turnovers, and a really dumb foul by Rice after that one

They've shown zero ability to get things together after sloppy starts, so very nervous that this is gonna be a mess all evening.
