Hence my frustration with the "he's too much" thinking. IF we end up sitting by and going cheap and get leap frogged by others in the ALE then this will be a bust of an offseason.

Yeah, there's a big difference in losing out on Burnes to the Giants and losing to the Red Sox. We likely face him 0-1 times one way and 2-4 the other.

But I could see the allure of a Castillo trade - we commit for less time and less money which is a lot less risk while getting a guy who is comparable. Losing Mountcastle opens up an opportunity for Mayo, if he's as great as they say. If I'm Elias, I'd opt for the Castillo choice. Plus we'd get a pick for losing Burnes.

There's not a chance on Burnes.

How did you get that out of Boras quote? Rubenstein has all but said the money is there to win a championship. Its juts comment sense that we have a far better shot with Burnes than without him.

Maybe, but Boras's clients benefit if the rest of MLB thinks we are willing to spend money. And the Orioles benefit if the fans believe they are willing to spend money. So no one really has a reason to say otherwise.

Scott Boras really kissing up to the new Orioles ownership. Weird.

Because Boras does this all the time. He talks up teams to drum up interest from other teams.

I don't think Burnes wants to be here and I think he's going to cost 300+ million. It's not gonna happen.

Is this a joke? I seriously can't tell. Castillo has been worth 8.1 WAR over the last 3 years. He's a salary dump for the Mariners but there will be interest and it will certainly take more than Mountcastle.

That said, I'd be pissed if we lose Burnes to anyone but a west coast team. And if we lose him to the Red Sox along with Crochet they would no doubt leap frog us in the balance of power in the AL East.

He's 32 years old and plays half his games in a very pitcher-friendly park. Plus, he's getting paid $25 million per annum for at least the next three seasons. I never said Castillo wasn't a good pitcher, but when you factor in everything, that's not particularly good value.

Or he's trying to do an end-run around the GM and get directly to the owner. Some of the biggest contracts were struck when the agent dealt with the owner and not the GM.

I think Mountcastle is most of what it should take for Castillo.  He really fell off in 2024.  The ERA still looks good, but upper 3s in Seattle is mid-4s most other places.  Fair to question how much we punish guys for their environments, I don't think its a linear translation for everyone even though that is the best way to apply the concept across the board.

If you  think 2024 was a down year, then he's a great buy low candidate.  If you think its the new normal, then he's overpaid by about $8-10M a year.
