Pretty stark platoon splits last year but I suppose the wall makes it easier to stomach such a hitter

Statcast profile says he hits the ball really hard but also strikes out a lot so if anyone was hoping for a change in what the org likes in hitters I've got some bad news

In 2024, he destroyed LHP, and was below average vs. RHP.

So, replaces Santander in RF.... makes it that much easier for the O's to part with Kerjstad.
(Though the O's could be done with Mountcastle and O'Hearn... and just replace them with Mayo and Kjerstad.)

Hilariously direct correlation between how much he K's and how much he hits for power for his career

O'Neill has too long of an injury history to suggest he's Santander's (lone) replacement. There has to be more things going on here.

Also worth noting, just from watching O's/Red Sox games, O'neil seems to bring a little it attitude. Much needed with these laid back young guys.
Check out the documentary on the Red Sox 2004 Comeback season. The Pedro hitting Jeter segment. As Pedro said re: hitting Soriano and Jeter... "I sent them both in the same ambulance to the hospital. I was pretty much the shield for every one of my players. Remember." 27 minute mark of the first episode. Don't need to watch anything else, it's still the Red Sox so who cares.
But the Orioles need THAT attitude from a few guys... desperately. They won't get it from Hyde.

The injury history is definitely notable. One season of 141 games. Next highest 113 here in '24.
He's obviously signed to start though imo.
I'm expecting Cowser in LF, and Mullins back in CF.... so he's being targeted for RF.
Mountcastle, O'Hearn, Mayo, for 1st and DH currently, also factoring in 40 games at DH for Adley.
Of course Kjerstad still here for the moment.
I'm still guessing that Mountcastle gets moved.
What's the path you see where the O's wouldn't be envisioning O'Neill as Santander's replacement?

I agree with the blogger on Camden Chat who surmised Kjerstad could lead the strong side of a platoon with O'Neill in RF, cuz O'Neill demolished lefties last year (1.180 OPS in 156 PAs last season).

I mentioned above his splits.
Did the Camden Chat blogger note that Kjerstad in his limited sample was better vs. LHP too?
Kjerstad's numbers vs. RHP were better (.732 OPS) than O'Neill's (.693); but I don't think that's going to give him the strong side of a platoon.
O'Neill is being paid enough where he's going to regularly be in the lineup.
They got someone with experience, maybe he's fiery... there are some analytics to like... etc.
I get it.
I would have just gone with Kjerstad as my everyday starter in RF, and used that $ elsewhere.

Then they're going to use Kjerstad as a piece in a trade if you think O'Neill is here to get the primary # of ABs in RF, which actually creates another problem because you need some redundancy in RF cuz O'Neill will invariably go down with an injury that sidelines him for a month or so mid-season.

Wonder if moving the leftfield wall in helped convince him to sign. That and the money, of course.
