It's not the most glamorous part of the offseason but it's still a roster spot that's currently open

None of those. The way they want to use Adley means our "backup" catcher plays a lot more than is typical. Unless they think Basallo is going to be ready next summer they need to find better than these guys.

Edit - Actually I'd probably bring McCann back over anybody else on that list.

Carson Kelly is the answer.

Surprise! It's Gary Sanchez!

Good grief.

If the goal was to sign a guy to make O's fans miss McCann the most?

Then Sanchez is your guy.

How so? He’s better in every conceivable way.

Well, no he isn't (cERA since '22), but I will admit I was surprised to see him improve his game behind the plate (from historically awful to passable).

It's just funny to go from a guy who literally stayed in a game after being hit in the face by a 98 mph FB to a guy who on multiple occasions quit on plays when he played for NY.

You get a long leash if you're crazy enough to get behind the plate.

Let me clarify things a bit - I'm happy for Sanchez. And in a utilitarian sense, the O's will hopefully get a serviceable BUC out of him before Basallo is ready.

There might have been better options out there, but they likely would have required multiple years.

Broader consequence here is Mayo now does not appear to have a path to make the roster.

Maybe the plan is to count on O'Neill missing 2/3 of next season and they'll work him in that way.

We'll see, Mountcastle still may be traded.

I don't think it's the worst thing for Mayo forcing his way into the big league roster by having a strong spring training. It worked well for Cowser last year.
