The old football adage that good defense defeats good offense really doesn't ring true anymore. Especially with the popularity of RPO offenses now, and the college rule that allows offensive players to block up to 3 yards past the LOS on pass plays, even OL (vs just 1 yard in the NFL). That difference is huge. You get a QB who can run and make quick decisions in an RPO offense, it's almost indefensible. Consider the recent B1G championship game. Penn State had a Top 10 defense throughout the season, holding opponents to about 15 points per game and 275 ypg. But Oregon hung 45 points and 469 yards on them. That's just one example.

Jets gonna Jets.
This sure isn’t gonna help them get players out of the portal, or HS recruiting, knowing he now has and wants to pursue NFL aspirations. Unless this is completely untrue, Locksley just crapped all over the one part of coaching he excelled at.

Its all one year deals now, don't think Locksley interviewing for a head coaching job means the Terps won't be able to get players.

They’ll get warm-bodied players, of course. But the few highly recruited players don’t come to MD because they’re showered with more NIL money or because UM is an established pipeline to the NFL. The tipping point was the relationship they built with Locksley. Even though players can move on a year over year basis, I suspect most commit to a school with the belief they want to stay long term and simply keep their options open. If Locksley is now marked as a flight risk, I’m skeptical those better recruits will view him the same way.

I don't see him interviewing making any impact at all with recruiting

Locksley interviewed for the Miami Dolphins’ head coaching job before they hired McDaniel, I don’t think that’s impacted his ability to recruit whatsoever.Jets gonna Jets.

If I recall at the time, it helped him get a raise.
I wouldn't begrudge him to listening to any serious offer... but he has know at some level that the Jets aren't sincere at hiring him. Out of the bowl cycle this year, a Top 40 ish program the prior 3 years, doesn't scream, time for a pro job.
Knowing that the Jets aren't serious, I don't think it's a great look for him or the Jets.
He's going to be asking his players (those staying, those coming in) to buy into the program.
For those coming back, to recommit. He presumably met with everyone, and those who stayed he talked about his vision of the program, and where they fit in. I think it's a hard look when a few weeks later, he's out talking about another job.
Do I think Malik Washington is going to try and get out of his commitment? No (don't think it's easy to do even in the current NCAA climate) but if I'm Washington... I'm a little miffed just on the appearance.
Re Jets... I like Lox. I think he gets unfairly maligned overall... with the horrible 2+ years at New Mexico further souring people on him (I don't think the NM experience means anything).
While he was the Nation's Top Assistant at Bama, and has done some decent things at MD... I think it's a disservice to him, and to Black coaches to interview him.
There are numerous black coaches with better resumes.
They should be part of the interview process without the Rooney Rule.
Maybe Lox feels obligated to interview as he's the founder of the National Coalition of Minority Football Coaches.

Wouldn't those kids know that the Jets aren't serious too, that he has no chance to get the job? Who knows, he may have even talked to the bigger name guys like Washington to give them some assurance.
I think going through the interview process is probably useful to him, personally. At the very least it's practice at interviewing.
I don't get why the Jets are doing it, but they already interviewed Aaron Glenn, who is a reasonable candidate, so Locksley isn't just a Rooney rule check box. eta who knows see below

I thought they now have to interview two minority candidates.

You're right, didn't know that, so maybe he is just checking a box.
But they also interviewed Ron Rivera so I think it was still already satisfied.

To me it would seem that if the Jets are in no way serious about him and want a warm body that checks the box, that because of his position he'd be more inclined to pass and would urge them to go interview a minority candidate that they are serious about.
Of course I suppose it's remotely possible they do view him as a serious candidate (this is the Jets, after all). Or maybe he's serious about simply wanting to get out of college, given the current chaotic landscape, and any opportunity to get in front of NFL people is worthwhile....even if the result is someone is only interested in him as an OC.

For whatever reason, virtual interviews don't count towards satisfying the Rooney Rule. Rivera interviewed in person, but Aaron Glenn did so virtually. So Locksley would've checked that box for them, assuming that he interviewed in person.
