Keep Locksley, stop paying big dollars for his recruiting classes, put over half of the NIL collective into basketball. Fine with letting football wither, just do enough to make sure the Big Ten doesn't kick you out.

Interestingly, Scott Greene (Terrapin Nation) is saying that Locksley’s buyout is cut in half if he’s fired after December 1st. That’s not what I’d read in the contract I saw, but if true don’t be surprised if they wait until then. Candidate pool will be a bit thinner by then, though.
At least they don’t have to worry anymore about him getting an extra year tacked on to the end of the deal every time he makes a bowl game. Now that was a gift from Damon Evans that kept on giving for a while. By far the dumbest clause ever to put in a contract (and I know MD isn’t the only one). Give your coach what is essentially a lifetime deal just for winning 6 games a season, and that’s all he’s really incentivized to do.

Michael Howes (The Diamondback) reporting that The USM Board of Regents has scheduled a closed "special" meeting on Tuesday at 5:00 PM ET to discuss the "financial analysis of an athletics-related contract under consideration".

Well well. Those things can go either way. My guess is they’ll hear a presentation from Jim Smith on how he’d cover the buyout if he can’t get enough donor money, and decide from there.
And this is as good a time as any to remind that they would not owe Locksley the full lump sum up front (unless his contract specifically stipulates that, which it almost assuredly does not). He’ll likely be paid out the same way he would if he were still in the job. Also, it’s pretty boilerplate for these contracts to have a duty to mitigate + offset. So He’ll have to make a good faith effort to find other employment and his new salary would be subtracted from what MD owes. But obviously that can’t be accounted for now since no one can foresee where he’ll land and what he’ll make.

Ah, well that is a much heavier lift, and most definitely requires donor help.
And another horrible reminder of how bad an AD Damon Evans was. Can MD ever hire one competent person for that job?

It will suck losing some of the top local recruits to the Moon, but still think MD has no other choice but to move on from him.

Randy Edsall brought in some top local talent. Durkin brought in some top local talent. What Locksley is doing isn't anything super unique, especially considering the results.

That was fully intended with tongue-in-cheek. A good coach will get talented recruits, be it local, outside the region, and from the portal. Do think if he’s let go we can expect Locksley to land on some other staff where he will continue to be a big influence on DMV recruiting, but we’ve been there before and it wasn’t the end of the world.

I can't see Locksley getting another HC job at a school Maryland has to worry about losing recruits to. Even if he does, it would be worth the trade off to get rid of him.
Head coaching, unlikely. But I think plenty of programs would want him on their staff just to get in on the top DMV players. The obvious choice is Penn State who will soon have a new HC. If you are the new guy there, what better way to make sure you keep the pipeline of MD-based players flowing than to hire Locksley to your staff.
