Holmes is much older than Jordan Hicks, but he was also a much better reliever. Hicks got similar money (4/$32M IIRC) to try the same type of conversion with the Giants. Some other relievers have had better success converting to SP recently, with Seth Lugo probably the most successful example. Certainly seems like teams are trying this more often than in years past. With SP generally going fewer innings and trips through the lineup, maybe it's an easier transition than previously.

Soto is an amazing bat. Will be interesting to see how the Yanks pivot.

I really hate to see Santander go to the Yankees, but I'm glad we don't face Soto-Judge so often.

No bat is as good as Soto. But is Burnes, Santander and + money better spent. Who knows.

There's simply no replacing Soto, but Santander/Bregman is better than what they currently have.

I think Burnes + Santander likely costs more per year than Soto.
Obviously the length of commitment will be vastly lower, but that's mostly beside the point regarding their budget for 2025.

Reportedly no deferred money and escalators that could make it worth up to $800M
Soto's deal also reportedly includes a $75M signing bonus and an opt-out after 2029.

Which can reportedly be voided if the Mets boost the average annual value from $51 to $55 millon over the last 10 years of the deal. What the hell, what's a few more dollars among friends?

I'm guessing that's the escalators I first heard about and mentioned earlier. I'm sure Mr. Hedge Fund Manager can figure it out.

Forget the Soto deal, we've got Tyler O'Neill!
In just two short years, Aaron Judge's deal with the Yankees was more than doubled in terms of total dollars.

Santander. And he'll hit 50 HR up there.

Doubtful. I actually think he goes to Bos or Tor. Yanks go for pitching and Bregman. Or Alonso. They can play Dominguez in CF.
Santander. And he'll hit 50 HR up there.

Not that I ever expected it to happen to begin with, but the Soto contract pretty much guarantees that Gunnar isn't going to be signing any extension.
