It's not just the tax on the contract but the goal of occasionally getting below the threshold to avoid the implications of being 2nd or 3rd time payers. The top tax level is 110%, so it's significant.

Especially for a team like the Mets who don't specifically care about how much they spend (they'll spend over the "Cohen tax"), but don't want to give away money when they can avoid it.

I'm guessing part of the intent of this thread is to get the local assessment of what it would take to sign these guys (who are the top guys on the market).

Boras wants the pitching record for Burnes, Fried wants to play on the West Coast and I don't want Snell period, so I'm out on these guys.....but the Orioles need to address a SP so let's use this thread for that discussion too.

I think the easiest answer for the Orioles is Verlander.  His late season performance and age will limit what anyone does.  He's going to miss time and he need 40 wins to 300 so he's probably trying until he's a broken toy.  He's also a NOVA guy so there could be additional appeal for the Orioles or Nats (if they want to try).

I'd actually move the numbers I've previously suggested (1/20, 15M with 5M b/o on same team option) down some...maybe 1/15 (same structure)  No guarantees for multi-year at 42, but keep pitching well and leading and we'll give you a shot in a big park with a good defense, bullpen and a competitive team (=Win opportunity).

Dipoto would need a trade partner willing to make something happen. Hmmmm.

....but if that doesn't work for whatever reasons (I think that's the easy button), then go play with Dipoto.

What's the biggest the Orioles could go?  I'd want Castillo.  He's kind of a mini-version of Burnes, takes the bump and has quality stuff.  Reasonably signed for the next 3 years and you probably have to work a 4th year in to get around the no-trade.

I'll take Haniger back in a deal, include Beavers and we'll see what the other pierces look like (whether you have to go to Basallo or you work multiple other pieces).

If you want the second big piece (Crochet), let's see how bad the CWS want to move Benitendi. Or go after McClanahan.
