I don't believe Elias can do what he says he's going to do.
Who in that FO has a differing viewpoint? We've had 6 seasons and 6, now 7, offseasons. We haven't seen anything different from this group. We always hear the words shared here previously. W did the same thing the past couple deadlines and offseasons. "We're very serious nad reflective", "nobody will work harder or be more prepared than we will". Then what do we do?
What is different about this self assessment? Aren't there now fewer voices in the room? Bunch of the coaches are gone. Were they the problem? ...but none of the coaches are responsible for constructing the roster. If understanding the human side of this that I think (pretty predicably) impacts performance isn't changed, then what changes are we making?
What is the assessment we need to do? Why isn't the assessment already done?
There maybe one answer in FA, other than that, forget FA. The internal FAs you may want to talk to, you should have done whatever you want to do. Everything else you need to do, you can have aligned before FA starts. MLB doesn't want anything else happening now as a distraction, fine, but you can still get everything lined up.
We don't have to evaluate and evaluate and evaluate 100s of options and micro-nug every option and wait for someone to return a text while we're running our super-computers in the Warehouse basement. It isn't that hard.
You have like 5 things to do.
CF, 1B, Bench and extensions are all fairly the same in terms of getting something done.
The only question is how aggressive you want to be with the starting pitching. Not talking about Burnes, Fried, Snell...forget them.
There's a bunch of things the FO has done well, keep doing those things, they're mostly internal.
The external stuff has been weak. If you want to break the narrative, then do things that break the narrative.
Be proactive.
Find a way(s) to leverage money (it won't be in FA) if Rubenstein wants that opportunity.

The big thing they have to do this off-season is extensions.
People may disagree w/me but I think the one indispensable player on this team is Rutschman. They started winning the minute he got here, and they fell apart when he did. Problem is, DO we try to sign him after what happened the last couple of months? Frankly, I don't know.

I would absolutely try to extend Rutshcman. I thought it was an impossible dream before his bad second half. Still assume he refuses and goes to FA, but maybe some security feels more appealing about now.The big thing they have to do this off-season is extensions.

Yeah I was thinking if Adley and Gunnar are too expensive then Westburg would be more affordable while still being someone whose production has definitely shown he's worth trying to commit to

Gunnar may be impossible to do but you gotta make the offer now. He and Rutch are the core of the team. I'd wait a yr. on Westburg because of the sophomore jinx. But if he does good this year, definitely extend him.

I thought Boras said they were calling him all the time to try and extend Gunnar. It's simply not gonna happen.

Actually, that's not what they said, but they said it in a way to allow you to think that so what you're thinking is evidence of the approach.

You don't have to make the offer because that approach won't work with him.
Agree with thoughts on extensions in general and Adley specifically, but if you want to get a shot with Gunnar, he's going to need to feel left behind a little bit.
Shared previous structures for Adley, maybe modified some today (everything gets modified by new conditions)
Colt Keith (2B, Tigers, 6/29, flattened - which is getting a little more common) is a reasonable model for guys like Westburg, Kjerstad, Cowser and Mayo.
Eflin is a guy that seems to have fit in well here and he's in the last year of a 3/40 deal. Would he rework and take a 3/50 deal? You could chip a few M off of 2025 and lock in 2 more years.
Bottom line is there's plenty of places to start locking into this group. If Henderson wants to look around and "wonder where his is", that's fine. Have your agent propose something to us. It's not a lack of willingness, you haven't presented any opportunity.
Fine either way, but you have to want to be here. That's what contracts do...contracts = commitment

Ok fine, does that change anything?

Here's what Boras said in December:
As always, Boras holds court in an overcrowded scrum during the latter part of the Winter Meetings, and when Boras was asked on Wednesday if Orioles executive vice president/general manager Mike Elias had discussed a possible extension for Henderson with him, he joked: “Only once or twice a day,” but quickly grew more serious.
“With those kinds of things, I listen,” he said. “Mike and I talk a lot and, obviously, our job is to filter those phone calls, relay them to the players and we discuss it, see if it’s something that the player himself is interested in.”

He has 4 more years under team control; Adley 3. You trade them before their final year if they won't sign. The haul you get s/make up for some of the loss, anyway.

I guess we'll see how much they copy the Astros in this matter but the Astros didn't flip any of their pending free agents with one year left, Correa/Springer/etc stayed and I'd much rather do that than spend a year of the contending window hoping we sufficiently replace both of them
