I wonder if they'll also have shag grass in the outfield.

Yeah, that’s a really simple answer. 1B is covered by Mountcastle and OHearn. That leaves 3 infield spots. 4 infielders. 5 outfielders. I explained why that would work. You didn’t explain why it wouldn’t.

3 infield spots with 4 guys.

3 outfield spots with 5 guys.

Can it "work"? Yes ok you win. Lets just sit Kjerstad or send him down.

It doesn't "work" because there aren't enough at bats if Adley is going to DH as much as they say they plan to. You keep 5 OFers then either one of them is sitting most every game and never playing (and if that's the case why are they on the roster) and/or Mountcastle and O'Hearns split time at 1B only and rarely if ever DH.

Kjerstad isn’t going to AAA. Mountcastle and O’Neill will sit against some RHP. I can easily see 30 starts in RF for Kjerstad and another 30-40 at DH when O’Hearn plays 1B. Rutschman will almost exclusively DH against LHP when Sanchez catches.

Laureano is a strict platoon against LHP. He plays right. O’Neill plays LF. Cowser and Mullins split the CF starts against LHP. It works.

Sounds like you have it figured out. Too hard for my feeble brain to figure out just how all this translates into DH at bats. Can you make it simple for me.

Who is DHing over the 162 games in this approach (I get the 30-40 for Kjerstad)?

They'd have to release or otherwise move Urias in this scenario once Mateo is back. I think Kjerstad is more useful and I'm fine with that, but they've been very hesitant to get rid of anyone when they can just option someone else instead.

I think the idea should be to keep the guy who helps you win the most to heck with the whole options stuff. Yes options are a good tool but it shouldn't be the prime consideration or near the level of importance that it seems Elias gives it. Just fits with his whole approach on volume over quality.

Let’s assume 45 games against LHP. 117 against RHP.

DH. O’Hearn 80 games. Kjerstad 37, Rutschman 45. That’s a starting point. O’Neill and others might get some DH AB.

Good point. Urias goes in a small trade or Kjerstad goes in a bigger one but I’ll be very surprised if Elias sends Kjerstad back to AAA. Mateo probably starts the year on the IL so this one might be on hold.

I guess that works if they are willing to sit Adley way more than they have been, which I think would be a good idea.

I agree they should probably sit Adley more often but Adley DH 45 games and C 117 games is almost exactly how he has been used so it wouldn’t be “sit Adley way more” unless they wanted to.

Last year Adley was DH in 45 games and catcher in 102. He actually started 42 at DH and 99 at C.

If he continues to hit like he did in the 2nd half last year, maybe it's time to just make him the full time DH.  At least he hit well doing that.

I think that’s a little misleading. Most of his DH AB were batting RH so I’m not sure how much his bad hitting as a catcher can be chalked up to catching or the fact that most of those AB were while batting LH, which was his much weaker side last year.
