They only scored one run. They weren't winning the game last night, regardless of whether Burnes pitched another inning or two. So, its a silly argument.

Not really. This conversation started when the score was 1-0. It's a moot point now because the final score was 10-1. At that time it wasn't that cut and dry.

You dont know how the game flow goes if he throws another inning. I agree there. I just dont have a problem with them being super safe yesterday.

So that's 13 runs in the last 4 innings for the bullpen.

I really think the bigger question is do you concede the division title or do you keep fighting until it's over even though the chips are stacked against you. The fact that it was Burnes complicates things because he's gonna be your game one starter. I get the reasoning but I don't think that game was totally irrelevant either. Now there's still work to do before we can completely call off the dogs.

The bullpen was hammered either way.  So, he pitches another inning and they lose 6-1 instead of 10-1.  They weren't winning that game.

I do.

I never had friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?

Do you know what the score will be for tonight's game?

You don't know that

I'd have kept him in one more inning then pulled him before 90 pitches.

But as a thought experiment...let's say leaving him in for one more inning absolutely guarantees the Orioles win last night and keep division hopes alive, but if they don't win the division it makes it 1% less likely that they win Game 1 of the WC Round as he'd be on less rest than he's used to this season after pitching a normal workload.  What's your move in that scenario?

In that case clearly the playoffs are more important. Though I wonder what the chance of winning the division and getting a bye would have been with a win. Over 1%?

But if that’s really the reasoning even 70 pitches is too many IMO. He should have gone like 2-3 innings.

2-3 innings is what they did last year with Bradish.  Probably depends on the player and how much time until the next start for what is the right number of pitches in a low leverage game prior to a max leverage game.  And probably a lot of error bar around that, too.

Just 1% less likely, then I'm taking that deal all day.  Full disclosure my judgement is clouded by my disdain for the Yankees.   Winning the division wasn't even my biggest reason (they blew that opportunity in the prior weeks)  I just didn't want the Yankees to clinch against us, yes I know that's silly.   Having said that, the playoffs are what matter and if this helps Burnes pitch better next week then great but in the heat of the moment I don't like it.

You don't think the pressure/nerves of a 1 run game has any impact on the performance of the opposing pitchers?
