Very disappointing loss.  Especially with the early lead.  Burnes is quickly giving the team reason not to fret over losing him in the off season.

Burnes was never going to be here beyond this year anyway. He’s a mercenary that we gave up an everyday player for. A hired gun. And he’s crapping the bed at the worst possible time.

If anything, he’s pricing himself into our market. But I tend to doubt this affects his price tag all that much. But if there’s truth to him holding back his repertoire to ensure he makes it to FA to get the biggest possible deal, well, karma can be a bitch.

And in reality the first 2 runs were not much on our offense. Neither one of those guys should have even been on base. Awful.

The infield D bothers me more than anything else. Can be so shaky. You have to play clean baseball to win consistently.

And, if I am not mistaken, most of those errors came after June 1.

 

If you had told me at the beginning of the year that Gunnar would be near the top of the league in errors I would have told you that you're crazy.

Gunnar has has one amazingly bad week defensively and been better than fine otherwise. That one week was so bad that his overall season is average at best, but I don't think that one week has any bearing on expectations of him moving forward. The recent errors aren't the same as that weird week. He's made two errors this month.

7 errors in 7 games at the end of July.
13 errors in 123 games otherwise.

8 errors in 83 games in 2023 (plus 6 in similar time at 3B).

Try not to relive that bad week whenever he has his typical fortnightly error.

(caveat that tracking errors isn't the best way to judge defense)

I think we can all agree Gunnars overall defense at SS is good but he also makes too many errors. Hes athletic as hell but hes not fundamental and consistent like a Cal, Bordick, or JJ

Cal is the only one who was similarly a freak athlete and had 25+ errors each of '83, '84, '85. I think you're remembering late career Cal more.

This is just a sloppy baseball team. Last night was winnable if you are clean and fundamental. Its beyond annoying. This is why there is no chance to gain traction and put together a winning streak or win something like 7 or 8 out of 10.
