Everyone expects Wilson will be cut in March. 85M in dead money. The funny part is they already had him through this year when they traded for him, the extension ended up just burning up all that money for nothing. What a disaster.

This is what having Case Keenum, non-Browns/Ravens Joe Flacco, Drew Lock, Teddy Bridgewater, Trevor Siemian, Paxton Lynch and Brock Osweiler since Manning retired will do to a team.

Honestly, this is a perfect case study to illustrate how damn stupid I was this off-season. I was just so off on all of it. Took it for granted.

At first I thought Wilson's extension with the Broncos was done in order to get him to waive his no-trade clause, but that doesn't appear to be the case. The extension agreement was reached months after the trade with Seattle.

If Denver hadn't stupidly given Wilson that five-year extension, they could have parted ways after 2023 and owed nothing. As it turned out, Wilson never actually played one down on that extension.

Yeah this is a wild result all around.  They still have to pay our $39M in actual money just for the privilege of letting him go play elsewhere.

Does the bonus count against offset money?  I know he's due $17M salary and $22M bonus.  So is all $39M subject to offset language and he'll just sign for the minimum elsewhere since he can't earn more than that (making the safe assumption that nobody wants to pay him $40M cash in 2024) and that'll allow him to stick it to the Broncos the most?  Or is only the $17M salary subject to offset, so he could sign a new deal that pays him more than that since $25M would be a relative bargain and Denver would be off the hook for that $17M?

I believe it all counts, which means Wilson could be one of the most team-friendly acquistions this offseason in terms of contract.

The veteran minimum for players with 10+ years of service time is $1.21 million for 2024. Were a team to acquire Wilson for that figure, Denver would be on the hook for about $37.79 million.

Let's not forget the 3 first round picks and others Denver gave up to end up with two losing seasons, Sean Peyton and no QB.

Pittsburgh is apparently interested in signing him for just that reason.  Wilson has said he will play on the veteran minimum since Denver will pay the rest.  He hates Sean Payton and has is willing to do whatever it takes to put the screws to Denver.

I don't know if he's done or not.  It's hard to believe he lost it that quickly.  If he does have something left and somebody signs him for veteran minimum what a bonus it would be to that team.  Would really like to see him go to the Raiders.  What a dagger in Denver's heart that would be if he made the Raiders a contender with Denver footing almost all of the bill!

Wilson was pretty bad in his first season in Denver. He wasn't terrible last year. I'm not sure why, but he never seemed to be a fit in Denver.

I'd hate to see him end up in Pittsburgh.

I really don't understand Denver or Payton's decision making.  Payton seemed to have no use for Wilson from day one and even though he played better in year two, they all seemed to be ready to get rid of him.

So now they have two years of massive dead cap hits and are drafting at #12 when the top rated QBs will be gone.  Are they hoping Sean Payton will be a winner in year 4 or 5?

In 10 days an additional 37M would have been guaranteed, 2025's base, so they would have been in the same boat next year with over 85M dead. I guess they figure if they know they want to move on get it over with now, I don't know.

The original plan was to lure Aaron Rodgers from Green Bay when they hired Nathaniel Hackett as head coach. When that didn't happen, they pivoted to Wilson. Trouble was, Hackett couldn't, well, hack it and was fired after one year, leaving new coach Sean Payton with a quarterback he really didn't want. Payton wanted a quarterback who processes first, second, and third, and only then uses his legs if absolutely necessary. That describes Drew Brees to a tee, but not Russell Wilson.

Thankfully the Ravens build the right way and don't trade first round picks for big name players and coaches.

It's amazing to me that somebody from Denver's ownership/front office did not step in and say Wilson is here, figure out how to make it work.

Payton is considered a great coach.  With New Orleans he won a SB, and was 1-2 in three NFC Championship appearances.  That was in 15 seasons with one full season suspended.  Six other times his teams lost in the WC or Div playoff game.  He did have a .631 winning percentage.

So now he has a team that has no QB and will likely be paying a premium salary to another team so that they can have a QB.  Seems like a total mess to me.

Very odd situation for all involved.

Denver should've hired a coach willing to coach around Wilson's strength.

I know there's only so many HC jobs available, but why would Payton take on a job knowing the QB had a massive contract and dropping hin would be a gigantic financial burden on building a quality team.
