Mayo will be your future at 1B. They don't trust him at 3B.

That's been my conclusion for like 2 years, but right now... how can he best help you?

They are either completely afraid of the glove, or they are thinking about his ROY status.

They’ve had an obsession with Soto for the past 6 months. Now we’ll get to see what all the fuss was about.

They're content with Urias defense/offense at 3B. Average bat with above average defense.

If they don't use Mayo then this is a big blunder. Are just going to can Mountcastle over the winter and go into 2025 with a total unknown in Mayo? Good grief if he's that bad he should have been traded yesterday. He wouldn't have to play 3B much at all. Once or twice a week. Once a week at 1B. Once a week at DH. And you'd get a decent idea of what he offers in the bigs.

If I am Mayo I was pissed yesterday with the trades they made and livid today. You can only blow smoke up a guys butt for so long.

And pull this string a bit. How does Mountcastle take this? I mean if they are grooming Mayo for 1B then he's out right? Not going to carry two rh 1B/DH.

If Mayo can't play D at 3B then he shouldn't be up right now.  If he can, then he should be up.  If he's borderline or questionable, then he should be up.  The right thing to do is entirely dependent on whether he can hack it at third or if he's a hack.

I have no idea.  Most of us don't.

They do have an idea, and they are telling us pretty loudly what they think.

I’d be really angry if it were the rookie thing. Not filling a need with the best option available for a long shot lottery ticket is foolish. I don’t think that’s it, or else Holliday wouldn’t be here now either.

If they don’t trust Mayo at 3B then it definitely makes sense, especially with the defense already struggling as it is. Means we probably don’t see Mayo until Sept. unless Mountcastle gets injured.

I think this is correct. But what do you think of the follow on concern. How is Mounty and Mayo supposed to deal with this messaging? It's loud and clear one of them, most likely Mounty, is out. I guess you can say well he's a pro and will continue to do his best....looking to bolster his value to whomever wants to sign him this winter?? Just don't like the optics of this.

I don't know the first thing about Soto.  Underwhelming bat and mediocre glove?  Maybe some speed.

Mayo is their future 1B. Mountcastle would fetch some decent BP arms in an offseason trade (two years of team control remaining). The O's will pickup O'Hearn's option to (it pains me to say this) split time with Mayo at 1B.

If they are this down on him at third, then it's been past time imo to completely transition him to first and/or RF.

Agree. He's been mostly playing 1B for a couple weeks but still some starts at third. Time to end that experiment if they're so down on him that he's not getting the nod now. 1B fulltime.

Claimed him off waivers in Feb, then lost him about a week later trying to pass him through themselves.

Claimed him again in April, lost him again about a week later.

Traded for him yesterday.

Must be something there they feel they can’t do without.

If they couldn't do without they probably don't waive him twice.

I meant in the organization, not necessarily on the ML roster. Guys like that seem to be a dime a dozen, so there must be some reason they keep on circling back to him. Guess we’ll see what it is soon.

I don't think Mounty will think about the implication at all until the off-season. They just talked about trading him for a month and he didn't seem to react. Mayo will be bummed he wasn't called up for 3B and then go about his business.

I'm assuming this is service time gaming so Mayo can debut later this year and remain eligible for the ROY next year but we'll find out if I'm right in about 3.5 weeks or whenever that cutoff is lol

I think they dont trust him at 3b defensively. They are in it to win it. They arent playing games. The Yanks are hot again. If they felt Mayo gave them the best option at 3b he would be here

Right but it's only 2 weeks.  They can (apparently) bring him up and keep his service under 45 days and fairly easily keep his ABs below 130.

You can run Urias at 3B every day for a couple weeks and then bring Mayo up to get some run and def replace him.  Manage the ABs a little.

I don't understand why you think managing the Organization intelligently is some wild offense.
