No relation to Rick Honeycutt?

I thought the same thing.  It does not look like it.  His father Bob, played baseball too, also at UNC.

If nothing else, guys like this can turn into trade bait.

But who knows, the O's minor league system is good at developing hitters. Maybe they can straighten him out.

Some will complain that they didn't take pitchers w/the high rounds, but they're better off taking strong position player prospects than questionable pitchers.Anyhow, they seem to have a number of good pitchers in the lo minors that they took in later rounds.

They've developed enough studs on offense that if they think he can be good, I trust them.

Elite tools with a flaw they can hopefully correct or at least make manageable. I'll take it over a safer guy with a lower ceiling but higher floor when you're drafting in the mid to lower first round. Go for the homerun pick.

So now we have a Honeycutt and a Burnes. Any chance of bringing back Steve Pearce?

Or they trade for Blake Snell.

I'll keep saying this on this kid.  The Orioles** draft their profile.  They aren't making the decisions like you're sharing.  It's not risk/reward, if they didn't think they could get to whatever it is they wanted to get to, they wouldn't draft him.

I'm typically with your school of thought here, but when they draft him, they don't see the risk.  That is, they already think they got it.  We'll see, anything can happen, but excited when they take him because they aren't viewing him as risk/reward, just reward.

When he figures it out, 4-5 years from now, this is a "WTF" type pick.  Lane Thomas or Brenton Doyle to get to him.

From that article:

"[The in-strike-zone miss percentage] is the big number that a lot of teams are becoming obsessed with," McDaniel said. "The idea would basically be, 'If we don't know how you're going to progress in the minors and what you're going to look like five years from now' ... in-zone miss percentage is sort of that key that unlocks in a lot of teams' opinions what you'll look like because they think that's a proxy for a bunch of other things. And his is sort of below average, maybe the worst of the top-two-round guys this year and maybe even the last couple of years.

"So the thing that a lot of teams think is the most important is the thing that he's worst at. But he's elite at almost everything else. So, I think it's interesting to look at him through that prism. He's maybe the best defender in the entire draft. ... He has these tools that makes you think that there's a lot of untapped potential."

Honeycutt sounds like one of those guys who you could look back at, like a Judge or Trout, and wonder how did that guy end up in the bottom of the 1st round.

Hes def a guy who 20 years ago wouldve gone much higher. Before all the extra metrics and scrutiny. He a classic 4.5 tool guy if you were just going on the 2000 scale

He’s electric. If he was allowed to be drafted after his freshman year, would’ve been easy top 10.

I don’t think his main issue can’t be improved. Elite athletes can adapt.

X-link on Honeycutt getting the call.  Good stuff.

Quincy Boyd (guy on the left that hands the phone to Elias) is the Orioles NC Scout.  Two of the 4 HS kids are NC too, so probably his.

Well, that's kind of a bummer.

Honeycutt is a Boras guy.

Nothing bad about performance, he can be great+, just what that means for longevity as an Oriole.

Some ups and downs in small sample size first pro year for Honeycutt - Blog (masnsports.com)

To say the least, Honeycutt had some adjustments to make to pro ball and had his struggles in a small 13-game sample, eight with Low-A Delmarva and five in early September with High-A Aberdeen.

He went 9-for-51, batting .176/.250/.196/.446.

9-for-51 probably could've helped us out in September.

Will be interesting to see if they can work with him over the offseason and ST or if its more of a struggle into the year and they develop him through the minor league season.  Gotta figure there are some big changes needing to be made and big struggles usually come with that as they are underway.  Contact seems like a tough thing to teach.

Yeah my assumption was always that he was going to need some pretty big changes to swing or approach or both, and that's going to take a while to start to see results.

Yeah. You never know because hes supposed to be an uber athlete. He may make necessary changes but striking out as much as he did in A ball as a college player is really rough. I dont care as much about the batting avg but the Ks are scary.

They typically let guys just do their thing in the short period after the draft to get a baseline and then work with them from there.
