Wonderful....let's just add more confusion to a rulebook that our officials already have enough difficulty enforcing. Sometimes it really does seem like the league wants to kill its golden goose via a thousand pinpricks.

Yeah, they just can't help themselves I guess.

The NFL is implementing pretty radical new kickoff rules that needed a 10 page proposal to properly explain.  I'm sure this won't lead to confusion.  I'm getting older now and fear change so I don't like it.

Making something as simple as a kickoff into a ten page rule gives me a headache. That's prior to reading it.

Touchbacks can now result in a possession starting at the 20, 30 or 40 yard line.  I'm not making this up.

Coming soon: PhD programs in NFL Rules, because that's what it's gonna take to understand and explain it.

Supposedly, the choice was between this and getting rid of the kickoff altogether.  There was some thought that the next step after that would be to remove punt returns from the game.  This is similar to what the XFL did last year - that was better than eliminating it completely.  Now they need to adopt the 4th and 12 or 4th and 15 rule to take place of onside kicks.

My post that you quoted was actually my response to the hip-drop tackle rule. I think trying to precisely define and then enforce that is going to be a mess, not to mention the players trying to figure out how to avoid it.

As for the new kickoff....meh. I'd be fine eliminating it altogether, with the 4th-and-whatever scenario as a substitute for onside attempts. But I'll give the new rule a chance. I don't watch XFL so I have no idea what it was like.

The NFL gets stupider by the year. Just go back to regular kickoffs like we had for ages.

My mistake, I agree with you on that.  I’ve always felt that one reason the officiating in NFL games is so bad is because there are too many rules that are too complicated.

As for the kickoff, I’m not sure how old you are, but I grew up in the 70’s watching football and the kickoff used to be some of the most exciting plays in any game.  There were few things more exciting than watching White Shoes or Mike Nelms returning kickoffs.  If they could ever get back to those days, then it would be a better game.  Having said that, if they’re going to continue with the current kickoff mess then sure, get rid of it.
