Spot on. Really think they need 2 guys. A TOR and a #3 guy. But I have little faith in Elias doing that.

Right. He’s not getting a #1 and a #3. Ain’t happening. Probably just the #3.

You replace Burns with someone to go with GRod and Eflin. No, its unlikely to be a TOR starter though I guess they could consider giving up a lot to get a Crochet in a trade. I think they are better off going after a quality vet lke Verlander or Scherzer.  You add in Kremer, Suarez, Povich, McDermott, etc to go with that top 3 and you are fine.

Yeah I'm good with another top-2 type SP being added and letting the current back end guys fight for two spots. Like Steve, would prefer two additions so only 1 spot up for grabs, because 5 spots is never enough. Also I'm personally not out on resigning Burnes to be that guy, though I think it's wildly unlikely to actually happen.

THe problem with Burnes is the price but despite my frustration with him Id take him back at the right price. Man, I think Verlander would really be a perfect guy for this young staff. Hearing him talk the other night he wants to go for 300 wins and he loves baseball. No doubt in my mind he would be a positive influence on the young guys. And hes still got gas left in the tank. Id really like them to pursue him.

Saw that Burnes is on pace to give up the 3rd most SB allowed by a P this century.  I believe he is 1 off of the Os record as it stands now. Boddicker in the 80s

Time catches up to everybody. I'd want to see a pretty strong September for Verlander to be the main offseason pickup. I'm certain he'd be a good clubhouse guy, but that only goes so far if he misses 2+ months again.

Its not an either or situation but I can already say confidently Id take Verlander on a 1 or 2 year deal over Burnes for 270-300 mil

I'd agree with that. I don't really want to play in the top of the market. Like it or not we aren't going to have a huge payroll, mid range at best, the Yankees can have a 300M deal go sideways, not us. Even signing Rodon for 200M like people wanted might be limiting us today. Now if Burnes gets into like Snell/Montgomery/Bellinger territory then sure, though that seems doubtful. But those <100M type deals are probably our FA sweet spot.

And I think that is inexcusable with the resources we should have available.

Since we know all of the names that are available in FA and reasonably available in trade, I'd want to know who you think we should get.

The answer isn't you get a #1 because you can afford it. You are only selecting from the players on the shelf, regardless of how much money you have.

First off its not my job to make things happen. It's Elias'. But there are several guys I'd go after. Skubal, Crochet, and Verlander without looking at any FA lists or other guys who might be available.

I'm not arguing Elias is the right guy for this part of the job because I think he's proven he lacks the passion and tools for it (plenty of tools and passion for other parts of the job)....but you can't buy something that isn't available.

If your wife sends you to a looted store to buy great meals, you probably aren't going to find them.  That's not specifically your fault.

A #1. A potential #1. And a used to be a #1 and turns 42 next February.

Verlander's advanced metrics have been in steady decline since 2022 (not surprising considering his age). I'd take a flyer on him for next year, but including him among Skubal and Crochet is setting some unrealistic expectations.

I'd pursue him as a back end guy with quality veteran leadership abilities (I'd imagine he's an OK teammate, never really heard anything bad about him in the limited knowledge I have of the guy).

Skubal likely isnt available in the offseason. Detroit will try to contend to start '25.

Speaking of which, we still have 6 to play against them and they are playing some pretty good ball of late.

Don't disagree. I'd take Verlander in a heart beat to work with our staff. All depends on the cost of course.

You're right, it is your fault.  And that's unreasonable....but in this scenario, that's you.

I'm ok with Verlander , but he's not going to be some crazy dominator...he's chasing 300 wins and he needs multiple seasons in a good place with a good defense and an opportunity to lock down wins.  He's from this region so there's a lot of good fits there.  It's not some crazy contract.

I'm good with Crochet or Skubal.  I'd still put Shane McClanahan into this group.  There's places to go, but it's not in FA.  You have Burnes and Fried and then a whole lotta not-very-exciting.  If they make a major change, it's through trade, but that hasn't been the strength of this FO.
