Oregon, Georgia, Boise State and Arizona State are Top 4 in that order.

Clemson got the last seed, which I assume means SMU is out.

Herbstreit is right, Alabama is out strictly because of that hideous showing at Oklahoma. I’m fine with it. You have to show up for all 12 games.

Bama had 2 BAD losses. Both Vandy and OK were barely bowl eligible. They got it right.

Bama had 2 BAD losses. Both Vandy and OK were barely bowl eligible. They got it right.

The Vandy loss was excusable. It was right after an emotional win over a #1 ranked Georgia team, on the road against a team that isn't the pushover they typically are, and while Alabama fell behind early they fought back and made a game of it.

That Oklahoma loss was completely inexcusable. The Tide already had 2 losses, so they knew they were fighting for their playoff life. They went out, got hit in the mouth by an Oklahoma team whose offense was so beat up and one-dimensional they looked like one of the military academies, and responded by curling up in the fetal position. And unlike Alabama when SMU faced adversity last night they got up and hit Clemson right back

I think the message from the selection committee wasn't that your best wins and schedule strength don't matter, but your losses matter just as well. And if it comes down to a tight choice between a team that showed up and fought every week versus a roller coaster team that in the penultimate game of their season didn't even have a pulse, they will lean toward consistency.

I do believe this decision will have long term consequences though. For sure not only is Alabama mad right now, but I bet the entire SEC is big mad, because Alabama today could be any one of them in a given year. And the repercussion is going to be that when the powers-that-be do finally get around to deciding the format for the CFP in 2026 and beyond, expect that the SEC and Big Ten are going to use their considerable leverage to get 4 guaranteed spots for each conference, and since those two hold all the cards there's probably not much the rest can do about it.

The SEC just needs to move out on their own totally. Have their own season, playoffs, championship however they want to do things. Then they will ensure that they are the champions every single year. So sick and tired of hearing them complain. They stack the deck totally in their favor from the get go then complain when things don't work out.

Alabama had 7 home games and only 5 road games. The year Auburn won under Scam Newton they have 8 home games and only 4 road games. Is the SEC the best conference most years? Sure no question. But there is also no question that they play with a stacked deck.

Now some of the other big teams are figuring out this schedule scam too.

The SEC model:

1. Start the season with a bunch of your teams ranked.

2. Play 3 or 4 OOC games (at home) to start the season. Especially against a bunch of cupcakes. Go undefeated and move up in the rankings.

3. Then when conference games start you have the built in excuse that when you lose its to a really good ranked team.

4. Never leave the south after October 15th.

5. Finish the season ranked.

6. Start the next season ranked once again since you were "so good" the year before. Rinse and repeat.

LOL

Without the SEC (and Big Ten) there's very little money left to go around in college football. And if those two conferences do go off and do their own thing, what's left won't be held in much higher regard than the FCS is. I understand there are some people would be fine with that. Though the sentiment I hear from the G5 schools is they want a chance to play on the biggest stage, even if that opportunity only exists in theory for most of them.

When the college playoff eventually expands to 128 teams, the whole SEC can get in.

Not sure what your complaint is. They’re “stacking the deck” because they’re competing for a playoff spot with teams that play the likes Hawaii, Wyoming, Nevada and San Diego State for 3/4 of their schedule

Ok but BSU has tried for years:

1. Get invited into a "big boy" conference.

2. Schedule "big boys' OOC . But they are too damn scared with the exception of the Oregon and Washington schools. They did have a home and home with Michigan State but they chickened out after we went to Lansing and cancelled the game in Boise.

BSU plays 6 at home and 6 on the road every year. They will play anybody that is willing to do a 1 and 1 and probably even a 2 and 1. But they have drawn the line at an away game only, and they should.

We played and beat UNLV twice (ranked both times) and WSU (ranked when we beat them). As they say you can only beat the teams on your schedule. The SOS argument is too self serving. Sure the big boy conferences have tougher schedules in conference. But its a shallow complaint to me when they refuse to play the G5, and if they ever do its ONLY at home. So they can throw out the SOS argument all day long but they also control it by refusing to play the mid majors.

But lastly its really BS to me when they bring up this topic but want to ignore that they, talking Bama, lost two games to unranked mediocre teams. Blah Blah Blah

I’m not sure what your point is Steve. Even if we throw out the seeding and look strictly at the final CFP rankings, Boise and SMU were ranked ahead of Alabama, so I don’t see where the disrespect is. But if your point is that the SEC thinks Alabama was more deserving….well, duh. What conference doesn’t think that way about it’s own members?

My point is the committee got it right. No system is ever going to make everybody happy. Well unless the SEC got every team in the playoff. Wait, how would that work there are too many teams in the SEC to do that. Damn, better expand the playoffs. How about 24 teams. 16 SEC teams ranked 1-16 and then 8 at large....lol

Bottom line - They want to talk all about SOS.  Guess what. Alabama was ranked where they were entirely based on SOS. They were the highest ranked 3 loss team in the country.

If you want to argue to do away with conference champions getting an auto spot then they can talk about that at the next go around. Personally I think that's a mistake but I understand the argument. But in this case Bama didn't even make the game let alone win it.

I'm fine with having 5 conference champs guaranteed a spot. I think guaranteeing 4 of them a Top 4 seed is going too far, and I'd wager that won't be in the next iteration.

The SEC can crow about being the toughest conference in the sport, and no reasonable person would argue. But no one from outside forced them to be the conference where it just means more. Nor did anyone force them to make life even tougher by adding Texas and Oklahoma to keep the money printer cranking. Their choice.

I think it's perfectly acceptable to lobby that because your conference is tougher you deserve more benefit of a doubt, and that your 3-loss team may be better and more deserving than someone else's 1-loss team. I also believe that at some point you have to shut up and just win the games on your schedule, no matter how hard or easy they may be. That's where I am with Alabama, and the rest of the SEC, right now.

How ironic is it that if Oklahoma were still in the Big 12 Alabama might be 10-2 and sitting comfortably in the CFP right now? No Tide tears here.

Still, the SEC might have to sit and take it now, but long term they have the leverage when it comes to what the CFP will look like, and they're gonna flex. It's coming.
