I've seen 5 of the ones listed: Oppenheimer, Knock at the Cabin, May December, Killers of the Flower Moon and The Killer.

None of them scream "best movie of the year" but Oppenheimer and Flower Moon were very good; just long slogs about a dreary subject matter.

May December was a "that's it?" movie and The Killer had tons of style but very little substance.

I never had friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?

Oppenheimer was almost flawless. Like 9.5 out of 10.

I stopped reading that it gets "honorabble mention" while something anime is #9.

The Holdovers (not listed) was really good. Fun in a year of depressing material out there.

I feel like The Killer had subtlety but overdid it. Not the in-your-face ones like all his aliases being sitcom characters. After reading other thoughts about it after I watched it, some themes were so subtle I completely missed them. I think I need to watch it again.

You should give that anime a chance actually. I haven't yet seen this particular film, but that director is amazing from what I seen.

First two hours of Oppenheimer are pretty much perfect. The last hour is a drag.

Yeah, that’s the 0.5 deduction. Could have done without it, but it turned into a court room drama out of nowhere, a good one though.

Anime isn’t my thing. But it growing in popularity, and if someone points me in the direction of a good one, I’ll check it out.

Love the anime sequence in Kill Bill.

Spirited Away is considered the biggest classic from this guy (Hayao Miyazaki). Spirited Away (2001) - IMDb

Now while it a movie that children can certainly enjoy (not super young), I got a lot out of it on my first viewing at 40ish years old.

I really hope Oppenheimer gets Nolan the Oscar the man's career has merited.

The Boy and the Heron was delightful, Miyazaki's newest and likely last picture. Highly recommend folks see it if you like anything he's made.

Anatomy of a Fall is the best movie I have seen in 2023 and it's not even on this list but Knock at the Cabin and The Killer and May December are? GTFOOH.

And I usually enjoy/agree with The Ringer's movie takes.

Is that streaming somewhere yet?

That Adam guy is a weird dude. If a bad movie has one line, or one camera angle that resonates with him it’s like the movie tops his list. But a near perfect movie like Oppenheimer he says “honorable mention.” He’s one of those, if it’s too good, it can’t be that good, types.

May December had good acting. I’ll never revisit it. The Killer was good, and I do want to give it a second look. Knock at the Cabin was okay, but don’t need to revisit.

It's available to rent on Amazon Prime. I think it's $5.99. Well worth it. It may be the best movie I have seen in a long time. Absolutely riveting.
