Yankees played some atrocious defense in that fifth inning.

Couldn't have happened to a more deserving team.

Yankees defensive meltdown cost them last night.

I wonder if those douchebag fans who grabbed onto Bettis were "patrolling" the bar for falling peanuts last night?

That 5th inning was a beautiful thing. Cole works out of it but gives up covering 1st half way there is just chefs kiss.

That's a blunder on Cole for not covering, but it's also a play Rizzo should make on his own. Instead of staying back and waiting, he could've easily been more aggressive and taken the out himself.

I turned to my fiancé after Judge dropped the fly ball and said “this is how it starts, Dodgers are going to clinch tonight.” It was beautiful. Loved every second of that half inning.

Its a play Rizzo could have made on his own but he has to rush it a bit. Charge the ball a bit. He  could see/feel Cole had got off the mound and was starting to cover. If COle just keeps going hard hes gonna beat Betts. Thats just what he has to do. TO me, thats 95% on Cole. Rizzo shouldnt have to rush on that play.

That play sort of reminded me of Bill Bucker on that Mookie (that name again) Wilson grounder. He caught hell for that miscue until the day he died, but it was at least partly due to his looking up and seeing that his pitcher (Bob Stanley) was not covering first.

A Will Smith has now won the Series each of the past five years.

Cole opted out of his remaining 4/$144M, but it's pretty perfunctory as the Yankees can void the opt-out by adding one more year at $36M to the deal.  They'll definitely do that, so it'll bring his remaining deal to 5/$180M and his total contract to 10/$360M.

Buckner was dealing with what I guess was arthritic ankles. He was routinely removed from 1B for Dave Stapleton throughout the season, but because the Red Sox were on the verge of winning a World Series, John McNamara decided to leave him in the game so that he could perhaps record the final out.

I was thinking that as well.

When you get into stupid money territory, smart moves make less sense when you can extend a guy to simply keep him away from division rivals.

They should resign Cole and roll the dice that he can remain a TOR guy into his late 30s. However, they should pass on Soto. He's a 25-26 year old DH. Yeah, he's one of the best hitters the game's ever seen, but if you sign that guy to a $500-$650m contract, you're spending that $ on a DH, cuz he'll only hurt you in the field.

I expect they will. But as a 34-year-old with a lot of miles on his arm, and coming off some arm difficulties this past season, not picking up Cole's option isn't as absurd as it might otherwise seem. By opting out, Cole essentially will fetch himself an extra $36 million with zero downside over choosing not do so.

Nice work if you can get it.
