Maryland athletics are trash. Thank god we've got the Ravens and Orioles.

Hopkins football is ranked in the Top 10 in Division III. :)

The women's team is #14, and they have two massive games coming up against #6 SC and #2 UConn. Lacrosse and baseball teams ought to be decent again too. Just stop caring about the sports everyone else cares about, and watch the ones people don't care about. Then you can tell everyone what a trend-setter you are.

Absolutely abysmal performance. Highlighted by Donta Scott. For a guy who is prone to some clunkers, that was perhaps the worst game of his career.

Yikes. Lot of work to do.

ESPN doesn't have Big Ten rights anymore. Gotta go with the BTN+ subscription, except maybe when MD is the road team in non-conference games.

Feel like Scott's always been overrated by Maryland fans. He's nothing special.

I have BTN on YouTubeTV (and I guess there's an alternate channel or two with that), but LOL at paying a conference for streaming rights beyond what I pay Alphabet, who in turn doles out a few coins to the Big Ten for my sub anyway.

Everyone's doing it now. Wanna see all the O's games? Gotta pay for AppleTV+ and Peacock now, not just the exorbitant carriage fee for MASN.

Well, it'd be more like the American League East breaking away to offer their teams' games on their own network, but yeah, I get your point.

YouTube has the right idea telling the RSNs to pound sand on their asinine carriage fees. The RSN is the dinosaur in this equation.

The RSNs will gradually fade (the ones that are team owned and/or in large markets that make the network money will survive longer). But they brought a lot of money to the teams that probably can’t be fully replaced by OTA broadcasts or DTC streaming, or even a combo of those two. But they will find some new way to separate us from our hard-earned money somehow.

Interesting what the NBA just did with Bally’s. The league negotiated a reduced payment to the teams for the rest of this season in exchange for getting the rights to all of those teams after the season is over, even if the original contracts went longer. Sounds like the league might want to bundle some of the local rights along with the national TV package they will soon be negotiating to end up with local games on someone like ESPN+/AppleTV/Amazon Prime.

I'd be interested to see what the NBA has in store, but the fact the RSNs made teams a lot of money really doesn't hold any water for me. The RSNs insisted on exclusivity. Fine, that worked up until 15-20 years ago. MLB.TV delivers games as well as any RSN, period. So folks who prefer to pull the cord on cable should be able to watch their local team without feeling any guilt about what the RSN did for the local team. They weren't in it for the team. They were in it for themselves.

My point there was that teams who do lose their RSN, and have to make it work via DTC and/or OTA like a couple NBA teams are now doing, will probably have a tough time making up the lost revenue, at least in the short term. Yeah, no one wants to hear a billionaire owner cry poor, but the reality is that billionaire controls the purse strings and can cut overall player payroll and other competitive resources to ribbons if he’s not clearing enough money off the franchise.

Yup, Willard was completely outcoached.  The Terps offense - does Willard even have one, it looks just like Turgeon's.  The defense, if you are gonna press, then press, don't half-arse it, which it what the Willard press is.  Dontae, on D guarding no-one, just staying down low and double teaming 6 footers, that is on Willard to make sure he stays on his man.

Bad loss all around, completely outcoached and outplayed by Davidson, wooof!

The most concerning to me about this loss is that 3 of the 5 starters are returning upper classmen. This is year 2 of the program. What in the hell happened? Where's the leadership, focus, the improved execution, etc.? This loss bothers me more today than it did last night. It's game 2, but this was an expectations altering loss in my view. Incredibly disappointed. Davidson has zero talent. Even after the win, Davidson is still just 115th in KenPom. Which is too high IMO.

Huh..seems to me if they were direct to consumer all along this wouldn’t be an issue, right?

Spare me the fiddle, I have zero compassion for owners who wedded and bedded RSNs. The fact some teams own them? I laugh at their plight.

Angelos can slash payroll? He already has. The question is what will he do going forward, because he will lose fans en masse if he tries the poverty route.

I get the vibe that the game caught Willard unawares. I think he thought it was another cupcake warmup so he didn't have a game plan, especially offensively. Scott was sleepwalking. Geronimo and Long are useless offensively. Seemed like they were trying to not just have Young and Reese take over (until it was real scary late). So that doesn't leave many effective offensive options. And it's sometimes really hard to bust out of cruise mode even when you mentally are aware that it no longer is a pushover.

Maybe, but he's been in the coaching business for basically ever (as kid through his dad) ,and knows that the McKillops are great coaches with well-prepared teams.  His team was outcoached and outplayed.  We will see how he and the team responds.
