Gunnar too.
You’d think that If we were sitting at 18-9 that Gunnar, Santander and Mountcastle would be contributing but that is not the case.

At least Henderson works counts and draws walks. He'll come around eventually but in the meantime, he does get on base. Mountcastle had his walk for the month last week. Just too easy of an out.

When Mountcastle had that nine-RBI game a few weeks back, I remember thinking that if I were still playing fantasy baseball and had Mountcastle on my team, I'd have traded him before he was through with his postgame shower.

If I did the math right without that game he's 216/241/360. He's been a bad fielder too. But his statcast is still all red (except chase rate 2% and walk rate 6%, yuck), still hitting everything hard, but it still isn't translating.

eta I didn't do the math right, above is fixed, still bad.

He's a throwback to the dark years when all the hitters in the line-up just swung at everything.  I'm not a fan of the Dave Kingman school of hitting, although Mountcastle isn't even in his class.  He's a hole in the line-up along with Santander.  Apparently, the hitting coaches can't get through to him like they have the others.

He 3.3% walk rste is laughably bad. Dude is determined to swing his way out of everything. He golfed those HRs out his big night. Next day Brown is on the broadcast saying he talked to Ryan and asked why he swung at balls that were literally at his shins. The response. Something to the effect of if I take those pitches I might walk and therefore not as much damage is done. Thats his thinking at all times and its a brutal approach to hitting

3.3% is obviously an unsustainable rate. Can't succeed doing that. But that's also not who he is. Over 7% for his career coming into this season. That's still below average, but is acceptable for a guy with his pop.

I think him and Santander being so similar is a bit of a problem in the middle of the order.

Its so weird because Santanders approach is solid while Ryans exit velos and contract rates are solid. Dislike both because neither can come close to doing what the other does well.  Ryan has a horrible approach. Santander IMO makes too much weak contact. I havent even looked up Santanders contact rates or hard hit %. Etc. I know he doesnt make enough contact and too often makes weak contact.

Yeah so not surprising.  Santander is bottom 16% in xBA but is 56% in BB%. Mounty is 90+ % in xBA but bottom 6th% in BB%. Both are bottom 4th % in chase rate and thats where it kills having them both 3rd and 4th in lineup. No doubt about that.

Yeah like the Ben Palmer article on the main board said, Santander's hitting the ball too high in the air too much, above average pop up% and under%. Hitting it hard still, but just up. Once you get to like 40 degrees launch angle the HR start going down and xBA is under 0.100, and of his 67 balls hit he has 19 of 40 degrees or more. Combine that with more Ks than usual and it's going to be bad. But if that normalizes he could snap out of it and still be useful. I think you give him that chance, though in the meantime you are trying to win games so you can't give him forever.
