Chuck Clark was about as value-less in coverage downfield as ANY type of safety can get. Zero ball skills. Maybe negative ball skills. Matt Elam class coverage ability...

I personally don't care much for safety play around the line in general. Let your DL and LBs handle that stuff. The position of safety was named so for a reason... stay back and cover, jump up to tackle as needed.

I think that having a box safety is pretty critical in an age when you only run 2 or 3 linebackers on 70% of plays.

The issue is that Hamilton is probably 95% as good a box safety as Clark, and he's also far far far better in coverage, especially against big slot guys and TEs.  On top of that Hamilton is one of the best safety blitzers in the league, and he's likely to improve in the box as he gets more experience.

Worth noting, the cap savings for Clark don't kick in until the new league year starts.

I agree that losing Clark isn't a huge loss.  But it is a depth loss.  It's the kind of loss that the Raven's will have to deal with to be under the cap.  Won't hurt on opening day.  But as the season goes on, nobody gets away without suffering injuries.  The Ravens will have little depth to account for those injuries.
