LOL as someone who can remember multiple "you are ugly" chants since 2015-16 (when I was a freshman) if they're stopping at a generic f--k Penn State then it's tamer than it was when Jarrod Uthoff came to town

I didn't mind "you are ugly".  That's funny in an ironic/demeaning sort of way.  I remember there was a UVA player who had a horrible porn-stache and they chanted "shave your moustache".  That's funny.  Chanting "F Penn State" isn't funny or clever or anything.  It's just dumb.

Well 300-some other programs don't seem to have the same behavior.  I know there have certainly been bad/vulgar chants from other fanbases, but not regularly chanting F-bombs in unison at the opposition.

Sounds like 300-some other programs have student sections without enough energy. Maryland's the only team unbeaten at home in B1G play so far, until they're throwing batteries at people or whatever was that incident was, just let them do what seems to be helping the team.

The disgusting language should be dealt with.  Show some class.

I know Scott Van Pelt condemned it a while back.  If they're not going to listen to SVP of all people then I don't really know how you police it.  What are you going to do, close the student section?  That obviously won't and shouldn't happen.

So the reason MD has been winning at home is because of vulgar chants?  300-some other programs don't have the energy that MD's fanbase does?  Have you watched some of these battles in the Big 12 this year?  Give me a break there.  You can produce the same amount of energy without that.

I’m not going to lie, the Maryland student section is just as much a reason for my hardcore Terps fandom as the actual teams are over the years. I’ve always obsessively loved that energy and feverish fanaticism they bring to the table over the years. This is why I became so concerned with Turgeon his last couple years here. He wasn’t even a bad coach, I just didn’t want to slip into prolonged apathy. Ideally, sure, cut the f bombs, but in the grand scheme, we adults are spending our time watching college kids on TV. It is what it is.

I don't really care about the "have some class" side of this.  It only bothers me even a little now as someone with a 3 year-old who repeats everything he hears and has no concept of when something is appropriate and when it isn't.  Haven't gotten bit by this particular thing (we don't watch much basketball yet) but I definitely don't wanna have to be on guard to insulate him from hearing something while watching a basketball game.

I love vulgarity, and doesn't bother me if a PG-13 movie drops a couple F bombs, but if that same word is in an episode of Bluey it becomes a bit of an issue.  At least an annoyance.

My favorite chant ever was "CBA" at Ed O'Bannon's little brother who was playing on one of those traveling exhibition squads for a preseason game.  He threw down a massive dunk then flexed and the crowd immediately hit him where it hurt by pointing out his professional shortcomings.

Forget what was said exactly, but remember Duke's crowd saying something to Dixon about his parents dying of AIDS.

Clemson and the NCST fans had comments for Vasquez about being Venezuelan.
Strawberry seemed to get stuff everywhere.

You want the crowd engaged.
I'm glad they brought back RRP2.

I have no problem yelling at the opponents (admittedly I couldn't do it myself now... feels weird as a 43 year old guy to be yelling at 'kids')...  and have always thought MD's fans have taken too much flak because one dummy hit Elton Brand's mother with a water bottle, and the FU chants to Reddick.

That said, I think you can be a loud and intimidating crowd without cussing.

In fairness crowds cursing can be a concern in any sport lol

It was Boozer's mom, not Brand.

Should've chanted JJ's poetry at him.

Terps students also scammed the Duke crowd into chanting the name of a booster who had been paying players, so that was really fun.

The Sean Williams / Ken Griffey's Grotesquely Swollen Jaw from the Simpsons sign is my all time favorite thing the crowd has ever done.  Pure genius from whoever made it.  Used to be able to find it on an image search but can't seem to stumble across it.

I think a UNC guy ultimately took credit for that one, but it was during a MD game.

Myron Piggie.  The story was that NCM's girlfriend's name was "Myra" and his nickname for her was "Piggie", so the Duke fans chanted "Myra Piggie".  Which honestly always seemed like a stretch to me but somehow it apparently worked.

Yes, that was great.  I believe I remember talking about that on this very board.

I agree, the student section is great.  I loved RNR Part 2.  But they're great without the vulgarity.  The vulgarity does nothing to add to the atmosphere or make it a tougher place to play.  It just makes UMD look dumb and uncreative.

And I am a major square, so I would expect myself to think that way, but good to see other less-squarish people think the same.

I mean, Northwestern’s student section was throwing f-bombs right and left at Indiana the other night and it was all over the broadcast. So yeah, it happens literally everywhere.

Yes. Terps social media put out a notice asking fans to arrive early for that reason.
