Southwest Xmas 2022 Debacle

Southwest canceled like 65% of their flights today which is — yea — absurd.
My sister was supposed to fly back to South Carolina Saturday evening. They canceled. Rescheduled to today. Canceled. Couldn’t find a rental car to drive.
Now hoping to find a rental tomorrow and drive back — might have to look into finding a rental at Dulles or National.
Worst is that there are rumors that southwest is trying to blame this on weather which means they won’t be liable for certain extra costs (hotels, etc) to customers. American Airlines? I believe less than 1% cancellations today so that’s obviously a load of crap.
There is a wbal reporter who captured a photo this morning at BWI and it was a mad house. Never seen a thing like this. Someone sent a video of folks stranded by southwest in Phoenix, the worker telling them they can’t get them on a flight for four(!) days.
Just unbelievable corporate incompetence at all levels.
Hoping for the best for everyone stuck in this madness.
The worst part? Nothing really from southwest. No statement of apology. Just boiler plate “we are doing our best to get everyone where they need to go” statement.

DO we have any idea why?

Popular belief is it’s staffing issues. Apparently lots of people that work there have walked out.

Feel for the people traveling. Saw a live news report from BWI this morning for a min or two. The woman they interviewed was not happy at all.

Something like this should never happen. The FAA does a great job re regulations for safety but not for customer service and comfort. It’s the Wild West.

Alaskan and Southwest are having major issues here in PDX, flights still being cancelled today despite the ice being cleared here since Sat. My best friend is visiting his parents in Palm Springs and his wife and kids were supposed to join him down there Friday, and they won't finally leave until tonight (maybe).
I refuse to travel over the holidays for just this reason. There's going to be bad weather somewhere in the country, and with more travelers the domino effect ends up being felt everywhere. Got caught in a similar situation in 2006. Ironically it was SW that came through and got me where I needed to go, and United/US Airways that F'd up.

I just hope they cancel her flight before I take her to the airport.

My mom is supposed to fly back to Baltimore from STL tomorrow morning on SW.
I just hope they cancel her flight before I take her to the airport.
Sadly, at least in my sisters experience, they’re so off kilter right now that they aren’t even properly notifying customers that flights have been canceled. You have to go to the airport and find out for yourself.

Yeah thats what the woman on tv this morning was most pissed about. No notification. Rightfully so.

*I’ve had an airline cancel on me before. A few times. Each time they put me up in a hotel (if needed) or put me on a flight on another airline. What southwest is doing here is airline malpractice.

Southwest has been making the news and there are concerned about their safety, repairs, and scheduled services.

Its not just Southwest, not making excuses for SW, but my son flies quite a bit, and all the airlines have lost what little quality of service they had. Delta, United, Alaska Air, etc.

Used to love SW. Cheap fares, no fees for bags, good service and reliability. Plus their hub is in BWI so they have a good selection of destinations. Now they’re the most expensive airline around...and now this. Not a good look for them.

the key here with flying in todays time frame and it affects all airlines. The planes are filled to max on every flight. You bump a single flight, it takes 1-2 days to get everybody rerouted.
Image canceling 2,200 flights on Thursday because of the weather, and how that domino affects every flight every where. Thats not counting the flights canceled, Friday through today.
