I’d like better top end pitching from the outside than guys like Lyles and Gibson, and the fact is they can afford it with the nothing payroll they have. But getting beyond that, teams need these types. Reliable arms that keep you in games and take the ball every 5 days. Furthermore, how you think Yankees fans are feeling about Carlos Rodon right about now? Or Mets fans about Scherzer or Verlander? It’s not like FA SP’s don’t carry significant risk. Bassitt has also been quite meh. If it keeps working, I’m fine with the money ball approach to pitching. Grayson and Bradish moving forward excite me. So does Wells quite frankly.

If you go buy QS as a measure of taking the ball every 5 days and keeping you in games how has Gibson faired?

 

26 starts and 13 of them QS. So its 50-50 every time he takes the mound. 

 

Need better for a playoff contending team. But at this point I would throw him out there as often as possible. Use him to minimize how many innings GRod, Bradish, and Kremer have to throw the rest of the way. Then in October he can watch from the dugout unless he comes in during a blowout. 

 

He does have the ability to have really good outings. Just hope the rest of the way we see some of those and fewer of the last two type outings.

Wells scares me. He'll give you 5 strong then totally fall apart. Also doesn't feel like he's built to start an entire season. Probably best suited as a shut down BP arm.

The O's pitching payroll as of today is 25th in the majors. Sustained winning with this low ball spending approach is possible but razor slim margin for error. And really there is no reason to take this approach. The core is in place. Spend to build in some margin for error. No guarantees. Just like there is no guarantee that the cheap pitching we have now will continue to do well.

 

Interestingly enough the Os are actually 28th in total payroll so their spend rate is higher for our pitching than the field. Guess that makes sense when they highest paid player on the roster is Gibson (which is kind of mind boggling when you think about it).

I think O's fans would be feeling pretty good about having Verlander right now, that is other than the ones that enjoy seeing the Angelos family hoard as much money as possible.

Bassitt has been disappointing, but he's also been one of these innings eaters you describe and has been a fair amount better with run prevention than Gibson. I wouldn't be thrilled about him at this point, but his contract shouldn't prevent anything else so I'd rather have him than not.

In the situation the O's have been in, the risk that we all commonly think about with free agent deals, pitching or otherwise, greatly dissipates until you go longterm at big dollars, and even then it's not nearly as risky as it would be for most other organizations. A paltry payroll and an overabundance of young talent does that.

Yeah, though, Bradish and Rodriguez are a strong foundation for the rotation going forward, Wells is intriguing, Means is returning, and Kremer and Irvin can also fill the Gibson role. So I have a more positive outlook on the rotation compared to this season and I'd feel great if they went out and got someone we'd feel good being in our top 2.

Kyle Gibson has reached an agreement with the Cardinals.

Reportedly a one-year deal for $12 million with a club option for 2025. 

 

The Cardinals now employ both the 2023 AL and NL leaders in hits allowed (Miles Mikolas). Mix that in with Lance Lynn and you've got the makings of, well, something that isn't likely to end on a high note.

 

In fairness, I did like Gibson, but I didn't see the Orioles bringing him back.
