Trading Goff for Stafford accelerates some cap to this year but saves them money in 2022 and overall.Moving forward I don’t see the improvement Stafford provides over Goff, especially considering the draft and financial costs.
If they kept Goff it'd be $35M, $33M, $32M and $28M the next 4 years against the cap. Assume they cut him after 2022 and it's $35M, $33M, $9M dead money for '21-'23.
Trading him accelerates $22M in bonuses to this year's cap but Stafford's salaries and roster bonuses are "only" $20M and $23M.
Cap hits including Goff dead money will be $42M this year and $23M in 2022. So actually a few million less than had they kept Goff over the two seasons and no obligations after that.
Two firsts and a third is certainly a steep price though.
