No consideration for contracts, long term future, etc. Just if you could add 1 current Astro or Phillie for next year and only next year for free, who would you pick?

My first instinct would be Verlander to massively upgrade the pitching staff, but I don't know when he'd run into Father Time. I think going with another pitcher like Framber Valdez or Zach Wheeler who isn't as old would be a safer bet just for 2023.

A huge left-handed bat like Yordan or Harper would be appealing picks but idk, I'd lean towards giving the rotation a big boost even if they're weaker players.

So, just for next year, you can get one Astro or Phillie on the Orioles for free. Who are you picking?

Based on how he pitched in the playoffs, Zack Wheeler

Good news! I saw a dog today.

At some point the age will catch up to him, but since it's just next year, probably Verlander. Love me some Framber Valdez though, and he pitched over 200 innings this year. But still, Verlander is the answer here.

Yeah Harper, Alvarez, or Nola for me.

How did I forget about Alvarez. He’s such a stud. Harper seems less douchey these days, but maybe that’s just cause I’ve barely watched any Phillies games all year.

Verlander.....other great choices but I think it would be easier to sign a big bat than to have one of them for free and to sign a big SP

I'm not sure the Astros or Phillies will just let us select one of their players, but if they did...

I'd take Yordan.

I don't understand why everyone is hot to chase a 40-year old coming off a career season...but if he's free, there's no harm to getting Verlander...but I'd guess I could solve pitching easier than I could finding a bat the quality of Alvarez.

Hopefully a fictional selection of a player we can't get isn't the only move we're allowed to make, although we may wonder if it was, months from now.

I'd go with Bryce or Alvarez.

Verlander is a solid choice though.

Not to over complicate this exercise, but a reason not to pick Verlander is because he makes so much sense just to sign in free agency while these others guys can't be acquired for real in such a relatively easy way (potentially at least).

I think Harper brings a little more to the table than Yordan but make no mistake Yordan is a stud bat

Btw, Schwarber is an example of a guy the O's could have previously signed (entering last season) if they were trying to acquire guys to help the big league club rather than tank and hoard money.

If they're not high on Stowers I'd definitely support going for Joc (who's in the same mold as Schwarber) to have another guaranteed LH power bat without worrying about how they adjust to MLB pitching
