1. Never
2. Yes
3. Maybe, depending on what else is done in the offseason.

If I had 3 questions; these would not be my first 3.

Seems like a lot of writing wasted on Jesus Aguilar.
Not if you're the main propaganda guy for ownership.
Good news! I saw a dog today.

What Duff said!

Come on, can't deny the potential here:
Aguilar hit .224/.240/.306 with one double, one home run, two RBIs, one walk and 13 strikeouts in 16 games.

Roch is always very careful on what he writes.
No to Aquilar
Yes to Lyles
Probably, to trading an outfielder, but no to the normal kicking the can down the road trades. The time is now.

Remember when they brought back an old, declining (until he started doping) Raffy? The propaganda went from "he'll be a bench player" to "we added a major upgrade with Raffy being our new 1Bman"
This Aguilar thing smells very similar
Good news! I saw a dog today.

I'd pick up the Lyles option. Once we add two better SP then go ahead and trade him.

Aguilar isn't good, and I wouldn't bring him back, but the O's do need to figure out who in the lineup is supposed to hit LHP.
I guess it's supposed to be Hays, Mountcastle, Santander, and Adley, but that didn't work out so great in 2022. Hays probably played hurt, and Mountcastle hit in tough luck all year, but as disappointing as their seasons were in general, they were even worse against LHP. Santander hit LHP well, but he seems to be trade bait. Hopefully Adley was just SSS.
So a right-handed power bat, an Aguilar type player, is probably a need, but preferably a guy who can still play baseball.

I don't really see why he'd have trade value, but sure, if he does then do that.
There's no way he'd end up in the rotation if I were building the roster, though.
Not suggesting that we'd get anything of note back. Just that I don't think we'd have to eat any money to deal him. It would actually effectively be saving $1M to pick up his option and then trade him, you don't pay the buyout in that case.
I'd hold onto him until I have those better options secured, and only then cut bait. I'd fully expect to acquire two better options, that's the plan just like you say. But sometimes things outside your control prevent your plan from being executed, so I'd keep Lyles as a backup plan until I no longer need him. If it turns out we do have to eat some money to deal him then, so be it, I'll pay a couple million to have had that security blanket throughout the offseason. Maybe it even gives you a very slightly stronger negotiating point with any FA targets or trade partners, wouldn't be seen as quite as desperate for pitching as if Lyles had already walked. Perhaps balances out any money spent later dumping Lyles, if there even is any.

I guess Roch has an article quota.
I normally have the position that the 25-26th guy on the roster doesn't mean much and isn't worth complaining much about (see, e.g., Brett Phillips ), but if Aguilar is signed to anything but a minor league deal that'll be a pretty annoying sign about the direction they are going. Adley, any of the middle infield prospects, and even Santander in a pinch should be able to back up Mountcastle sufficiently.

Hopefully Adley was just SSS.
He raked as a righty in 2021 in his most significant sample, but was equally as terrible in 2019 and 2022 in the minors as he was in the majors this year.
414 OPS in 2019 as RHB (28 PA)
1060 OPS in 2021 as RHB (165 PA)
~502 OPS in 2022 as RHB (19 PA)
I tend to think that he won't have very extreme splits as he moves forward. We'll know a lot more after we see what he does with his next 150 or so PA against LHP in 2023. I wouldn't be remotely considering platooning him, but he's gonna sit out 25 or so games a year anyways and I've got no issue with hunting for a LH starter for some of those days off.

Yeah I agree. When you aren’t trying to make the playoffs, adding a guy down the stretch who is a worse hitter than I am is meaningless.I guess Roch has an article quota.
