C, Texas

MLB.com:

Danny Ardoin spent parts of five seasons in the big leagues as a defensive-minded backup catcher. His son Silas has a similar profile as one of the best defensive backstops in the college game. A 36th-round pick by the Rockies in 2019 as a Louisiana high schooler, he has started for three years at Texas and has improved offensively this spring. Ardoin's upbringing shows because he's extremely polished for a college catcher. He has soft hands and receives, frames and blocks balls well. He not only has plus arm strength but also a quick release and impressive throwing accuracy. In his first two seasons with the Longhorns, the righty-hitting Ardoin showed an eye for drawing walks but racked up strikeouts without producing much power. He's making more consistent and harder contact in 2022, using the whole field while displaying enough strength and bat speed to provide 12-15 homers per season. Like most catchers, he's a well-below-average runner with no value on the bases.

Supposed to be a great defensive catcher. Like that he was drawing walks even when the bat wasnt on point. Bat got better this year. Some Maverick Handley vibes here.

Apparently his father played in 6 games for the O's in 2006.

Found this too:

Texas catcher Silas Ardoin, a Sam Houston graduate, is in the draft for a second time after his third year at Texas. Ardoin was a 36th round pick by the Colorado Rockies in the 2019 draft, but elected to attend school in Austin.

With the Longhorns, Ardoin has started 129 games, hitting .256. He had his best season at the plate this year, hitting .271 with 12 home runs and 50 RBIs.

A standout defensive player, Ardoin threw out 40 percent of attempted base stealers this season (22 of 55).

Ardoin helped the Longhorns reach the College World Series each of the past two seasons.

He is ranked as the No. 146 prospect by mlb.com.

Sounds like they wanted to draft Adley's backup.

Feels like a very low ceiling for a 4th round pick.

Not much of an overdraft based on ranking but maybe trying to save a bit of slot, either for going bigger later on or to make sure Beavers and Fabian get signed.

Cade Hunter has the same mlb.com rank and just went (many picks later) to the Reds.

Hunter was from Va Tech and is LHed with a bigger offensive profile.  I'm good with catching compliments, but would prefer the offense to defense.

Probably more of a generic draft comment, but I agree.

Fabian doesn't have much leverage but are you trying to put 2.5M together to protect his decision?  Will need about 1.5M above his slot.

If you're drafting slots, you're probably into less exciting college guys 6-10.

Law:

Tyler: Samuel Basallo has picked up a ton of helium in the past few months. Do you see star-level potential with the bat, and where does he fit in defensively long term?
Keith Law: Blog post coming. Didn’t see him catch, unfortunately. He DHd with Ardoin, who can really catch and throw but is no more than a backup, behind the plate that day.
