Corbin's 6/$140M contract is pretty disastrous.  He was really good in year 1 (3.25 ERA, 200 IP, 11th in Cy Young voting), struggled during the 2020 season and since then has been terrible in 2021 (5.82) and 2022 (6.59).  Making $23M this year and still has 2/$59M left on his deal.

Let's try not let him to return to his Glory Year form tonight.

Thanks to this post he'll probably look like 2018 Patrick Corbin tonight.

And Strasburg's contract has been even worse.

Strasburg over Rendon was always a sentimental/stupid decision, even with Rendon shelved currently too. Nats have never shied away from spending on arms though.

Yeah, owing Strasburg $140 million through 2026 is rough. Paying Strasburg and Corbin roughly $400 million is a big L,but they did get to hang a WS banner.

Giving crazy $$$ to pitchers is always risky, but SS had just pitched the Nationals to the WS win, so it was understandable that they thought they had to do it.

Scherzer's contract was perhaps the best FA deal ever for a pitcher so they haven't all been bad moves for the Nats.

This year he's actually got reverse splits, though everybody is mashing him.  But for his career he's had a lot more success against LHB than RHB, over 100 points difference in OPS against.  900+ OPS for RHB in '21 while lefties were 300 points lower.

1) All of these guys that have gotten big money are the types of guys that many here think we should be giving big money to.  It always feels ok when you project the future based on the past, but nearly everyone gets burned.

2) Corbin would be an easy guy to see bounce back.  I know he's over 30 and whatever, but when you look for guys that you can leverage in terms of contract for other purposes, he's certainly one of them.  Watch how this comment is predictably mis-represented.

3) The current (past) structure is MLB contracts is the biggest challenge to what players/agents say they want.  These guys are sucking up huge resources, producing nothing and make other teams risk adverse because the consequences are obvious,  The consequence of these contracts is not carried by the Teams, it's carried by the other players looking for their money.

4) The track record of big money Boras clients is horrible. Lots of other bad ones too (Corbin - ISE).
