Looks like the Big Ten Tournament’s 10-seed (and the final first round bye) will come down to Maryland and Penn State.

The Nittany Lions have road games against Illinois and Rutgers remaining on their schedule. The Terps will be the 10-seed with two Penn State losses or one Penn State loss and a win over Michigan State.

Maryland wins, 84-73.

They’ll travel to East Lansing and face Michigan State in the regular season finale on Sunday afternoon. That game will determine whether the Terps finish with a winning or losing record.

Doesn’t the whole thing count? If they lose their first big ten tourney game, still a losing record.

Yeah, I guess you’re right. I always think of that as the postseason but it’s not technically.

If they win Sunday they will be a game over .500

A loss in the first round leaves them at .500

Obviously some of it is a weaker schedule to end the year but it feels refreshing to feel like you're watching a Maryland team looks better in late Feb/March compared to how they played in January

No. He kinda did. He was on the staff. And before Turge jumped, he was primarily responsible for the big men, and you see how that turned out. I appreciate his attempt to make the style more fun, but 104th in adjD ain’t gonna cut it.

If they had won 2 of the 4 games vs. VaTech (4 point loss), Wisconsin (1 point loss), Michigan State (2 point loss), and Purdue (1 point loss) and hadn't loss to George Mason; they'd be close now. 

 

I've got visions of Fatts going all 2004 John Gilchrist and people deciding MD should hire Manning.

I think it could have.

 

Wahab being just a guy instead of a force and the bench not developing at all until recently were the things that hurt the most on the court.  But coaching and not being able to handle the early struggles in a productive way also had a big negative effect that snowballed early.  Maybe Wahab plays better in slightly different conditions under Manning.  Or maybe Green and Martinez make better contributions in another attempt at this season.  Or maybe Fatts hits his stride earlier in the year and is in the league POY race.

I dont think you have to worry too much about a Conf Tourny run.


Let me ask a different queestion. Trying to be as unbiased as possible, do you think Manning is a better coach than Turgeon?

I don't. I think had Turgeon stuck around, they were more likely to make the tournament, than if Manning had the reigns from day one this season.

I'm not very convicted on this one. I'm basing it more on the track record of both coaches overall, rather than what we saw this year.

Maybe, but it would have been close.  Turgeon left him a mess and he has made things better.  The problem is, I think Turgeon damaged the team at least mentally on the way out.   Manning has the players working hard and offensively at least they are an improved team and scheme over Turgeon ball.

Maybe, I give Manning a lot of credit.  He has made the style of play more entertaining, opened up the games. and has the team improving late.in the season.  The latter was rare of Turgeon teams.

Feel like the fact that Manning was basically coaching with house money while Turgeon was coaching with the pressure and frustrations from the rest of his tenure probably had some impact on how things went, being an interim coach seems like it's almost always easier than being a normal coach
