So as folks on here know I am a big soccer guy, and soccer often has concurrent competitions, but I'm skeptical of this mostly because it's not like soccer just "created" those in-season competitions. In many cases the cup competitions pre-date the domestic league, and they include many more teams outside the top division. This is even true in the United States. The US Open Cup is the oldest ongoing soccer competition in America, well older than MLS or any other indoor or outdoor leagues currently functioning.
If you're going to create a competition, it has to mean something authentically. Maybe you make smaller regional championships? Maybe you put draft picks at stake ... which I could get on board with. But it has to MEAN something aside from "oh here's this tournament."
